Based on what you have said, I am doubtful that a good pulmonary doc would label you as asthmatic.

Certainly viral bronchitis can cause airway reactivity, and just because it happened once, does not make you an asthmatic.

It very well may be persistent nocturnal asthma. It's what I developed later in life, and thankfully it's easily controlled. It's not consistent with random attacks, and diving is okay once it's fully controlled by medicine.
