Shore dive in front of Hotel Cozumel:

[vimeo]40968121[/vimeo]

we were staying at SCC, right next door, so the beginning of this video shows the swim over to Hotel Cozumel. After that you can see the area right off their dock, including the pyramid.
you can also swim over to SCC shore dive area from there.... really, they are right next to each other, sharing a seawall.

Thank you Robin, looks very much like the shore dive at Fiesta Americana.

I emailed Hotel Coz to get a quote, I'm starting to waver abit on the oceanfront req.

I've long wondered about the Barracuda myself--it always looks a little uncared-for from the street, but the combination of being close to town and on the water is pretty appealing. (And with the Mega and Chedruai so close by, there's no need to bleed soda money at the bar.) You could always take the chance...

If the main reason you like the idea of being on the sea side of the road is that you really want that view, the Hotel Cozumel could end up a bit of a disappointment. Most of the rooms look out on the pool. There are some deluxe rooms that are sea-facing, but you have to get one that's high enough up to see over the Hotel Coz restaurant building. We stayed there this winter after not being able to get into the Blue Angel, and the only thing I truly liked about it was its convenient location--it was nice to be able to walk into town so easily. And it was set up fairly well for diving. We didn't do the AI. It has a very different feel from the Blue Angel--big and impersonal. The public areas are a lot prettier than the room we had, which I thought was stark and quite small (I consider the Blue Angel rooms spacious and rustic-charming). But it might indeed be pretty good for teens. Its fake-a-beach is one of the better ones in the area, and they do have that big pool. They also have peppy people with megaphone-type things leading activities, and it seemed like maybe there were cruise ship passengers using the beach area. I spent the week knowing I'd much rather be at the BA, but I didn't absolutely despise Hotel Coz, either. I know sometimes Blue Angel tries to book people into the Villablanca. We stayed there once. By comparison, I thought the (deluxe) rooms at Villablanca were nicer than what we had at Hotel Cozumel, and we could see the water from our room. Their balconies were too small to really use. I thought both hotels were equally less pleasing than the Blue Angel, though in different ways. If on some future trip I can't stay at the BA, I'd probably choose Hotel Coz over Villablanca for its location and good wifi, but I'd be looking into other options as well. Doesn't Scuba Club Cozumel also have a "lite" meal option where you're on your own for dinner? That could work out well.

Looks like Hotel Coz is out, they have a large conference onsite that week which has gobbled rooms up, so availibility is very limited. With the prices for what is left, I could book 2 El Cantil condos.

I stayed at the Fiesta Americana last May with a trip the LDS sponsored, and I believe it is closed for some type of renovations. Lovely view, but the hike from the 5th floor room through the hotel, around the pool, across the road, and up to the pier was a huge waste of time, too far from the water. I don't swim or have anything to do with pools when the ocean is availible. The pools are for those elevating their BAC from my observations.

We got caught in the Villablanca time share presentation last year, and while I don't mind it, there are many places I would choose before staying there. Also, the walk into town is 15 min farther as the Villablanca is south.

Yea, sort of a "buy your vacation" pitch. I don't think you own a unit, they give you a week a couple of times per year, it was timeshare with a twist. High pressure close at the end, with the manager coming to the table to try to swing a deal. I sat through it trying to get a free rental car for the day while killing time between checking out of Suites Bahia and check in time at the BA.

Came back to get me tho, when the rental car guy came at the end of the presentation he insisted on applying a $800 hold on a credit card for my "free" day. I balked and he left. The wife and I wound up rolling the suit cases down from Villablanca to BA along the sidewalk as a result. Kinda funny to see.

You might want to look into El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel although it is a heck of a long walk into town. Orbitz is listing some pretty good prices is you are registered with Orbitz. You would have to check to see if there is any shore diving there since it is so close to the cruise ship docks.
