Going to Aruba in Feb. Are there any bars or beach bars that are a must go to place, like
Foxys on Jost Van Dyke, or Skinny Leggs on St. John or Sunset Beach Bar on St. Martin.
Also I will be renting a Jeep how is the driving down there, how do the locals drive?

Kakoa bar is my personal fav, on the pier @ Radisson...great place for a few drinks, mingle w/ some locals or simply enjoy a nightcap. Iguana Joe's & Mambo's are both downtown and lively, particularly when cruise ships in. As for the driving, it's a mixed bag with locals either driving very slow or very fast. Easy driving, however, and nearly impossible to get lost...

FYI - San Nicholas is one of the poorest sections of the island, has the highest crime rate, and is rampant with open prostitution. It definitely was not a place to take your girlfriend/wife.

As previously mentioned, Mambos and Iguana Joes, but the most hopping place is Carlos and Charlies. It is also the place that those little pigs started their death march with Natalie Holloway.

Jeep is the way to go if you are renting. Wath out for the party bus'. They will slam you off the road. Best thing to do with a jeep is explore the desert inland and eastern portions of the island, but be prepared for 2' of trash piled in the coves.

Diving is very poor and uninteresting. Food is good if you like continental cuisine - be forewarned that many of the restaurants require slacks and collared shirts (kinda a huge drag being on vacation). Don't expect to find any distinct culture. Aruba is a mish mash of different folks, and was only populated since the 1920's. Some Aruban's are very friendly, but we found most to be indifferent, with a higher than normal proportion that are just rude (population is overrun with young punks).

Would suggest Bonaire or Curacao as alternatives if you are a serious diver.

Be careful there. It has been known for "locals" to murder Americans and hide the body. The local police can be counted on to hinder any follow-up investigation.

Sorry for the rave, but I really don't like what happened down there recently and would make all effort to go elsewhere. The diving is not the best either.

Oh... she's talking about Natalie Holloway who "dissappeared" there in May last year.

It's been highly publicised on TV with pics of her.

I'm not trying to downplay her disappearance, but the media hype has been overblown. Actually, maybe the media should give every missing person this
much media coverage.

As for going to Aruba, it's one of the safest islands I've been to down there. I'd have no issues about going back.

me too, Aruba is wonderful. I was commenting on the fact that the other poster was making it out to give Aruba a bad rep...

its a shame the media has done this to them, I hope Natalee is found or the mystery solved...

But you cant blame a country...

My fiancee and I hitch hiked across the island to Skinny Legs. It definitely is a must see at St. John. We got so drunk just chillin and then had to hitch hike back. Not the best decision in the world......but then again, it was a great decision!

I'm going back to Aruba for the third time this summer. If you like diving shipwrecks, the diving is awesome. If you prefer reefs, not so much, Curacao is better.

Follow reasonable precautions, and you will not have a problem there. I feel safer in Aruba than I do here in Denver at times.

I will probably never go back to Mexico, though.
