Yea, I know what you mean. I was playing some basketball with my 3 sons and my knees are killing me:( I almost have to go 100% with them. It sucks getting old...=-)

I bet you were playing basketball outside too uhhh? Must be nice, you know...warm weather and all.

Sorry, its my first winter as a diver. :( I get cranky easily.

Rick,
Hope you have a speedy and complete recovery.
As a member of the "50+" club, I too have had to, on occasion, deal with the "cruel truth" that as we get older, the spirit may be as willing, but the flesh.....
take care,
Mike

DiverBuoy once bubbled...
I recommend the following training video -

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - pay special attention to module 5 on leaping through trees.
HHhhhaarrr!
Gotta love it.
Thank all of you all for your thoughts... it is a difficult thing to get one of life's little "hey you... you can't do that anymore" lessons. Luckily it looks like mine is all soft-tissue injury, with maybe a few torn muscle fibers that should heal themselves - in other words it looks like I'll be able to avoid the knife it I behave for a few weeks.
And with the Lovely Young Kat riding herd on me I guess I will...
Thanks,
Rick :)

I've had a few reminders of this sort of stuff over the last 10 years or so, and some of them have come with this kind of pain and/or injury as a reminder.

I used to think nothing of rather extreme acts. Nowdays I'm a LOT more circumspect. I've avoided screwing myself up badly enough to need the knife, but I'm acutely aware of the fact that my vision, dexterity and flexibility isn't quite what it used to be when I was 20 :)

The most recent was while loading up for a dive trip several months ago. I rather imprudently swung my fully-loaded gear bag (with weight and all in it) in a "funny" way and ended up jamming my elbow into the boarding ladder on the boat, which put a nice "side load" on the joint. I felt it "pop", but it didn't feel all that bad.... didn't think anything of it in fact, until the next morning... oh boy. That one took me a couple of months to completely heal from, and I was being VERY careful with any extension or compression loads during that time to avoid re-injuring it - I knew that a second "pop" would likely lead me straight to the operating table :)

Get well soon, and don't aggrevate the injury until its FULLY healed. A good way to turn something relatively minor into a really BIG problem is to do it again before its all healed up.

Play this right Rick and you'll have students carrying your gear for you .At least until you get "better"

Shudder.

I hate that sound. Heard it 5 times in my life. Always means a couple months of pain and rehab.

Yuck.

Best of luck! Heal fast.

Peter

Rick,
Don't listen too em. You can still do those things (I do) but you have to prepare better and think more. Keep a bend in your joints when jumping up to branches to avoid overextending. Stretch out a bit before going for a romp with the kiddies.
