I've only been to Coz 20 times in 15 years, and I've been stopped by police every time I rent a car and leave San Miguel.

The last time, the police came up behind and started passing me, then then he saw that I was a gringo, dropped behind me, and turned on his lights.

Well, the only response I have is that either you are exceedingly unlucky or you are somehow being flagged as a target. I have a lot of data that runs counter to what you are attesting to; I have dealt with the Cozumel police a few times and they have always been courteous and respectful to me, as I always am to any policemen I encounter.

The past 20 years we have visited Cozumel 2-3 times a year always renting a car with never being stopped by the police. Sometimes I am with my husband, many times I am alone. We use the car everyday! We don’t drink and drive and we follow traffic laws. Once my husband had an accident, it was his fault. Police were involved. No bribes, they went to the police station and the issues were resolved quickly. Thinking our experience is far more typical!

Cozumel is very different from most of the rest of Mexico. I have no doubt that in some parts of the country where tourism is not the economic engine that drives everything things are much worse.

I am a frequent visitor, and often by myself. I've never felt unsafe, but I trust my gut when something feels off, and remove myself from wherever or whomever it is.
