Is BP/Wing a good idea for a traveling diver? Does this stuff pack light or heavy? Also on a rocking boat how easy it is to assemble it and strap it to the tank? I never used it but I am curious:eyebrow:

i recenty travelled to both Tasmania and Vanuatu and took my SS bpw

it did take up a big chunk of my luggage allowance (its is SS) but i dont pack alot of non dive gear anyway so i was only a smidge over my limit. all up, with harness, d-rings, smb (its attached to my plate) ect i think my bpw weights about 10lbs

i also didnt take it apart so all i had to do was take it out of my luggage and throw it on a tank

ive decided that i will travel with my bpw from now on

cheers

Did you enjoy Tassie almitywife?

You can get an ally backplate that will be lighter again... so no reason not to travel with it seahound. It's just like a BCD to setup on a tank, albeit with an extra cam band. You'd manage

DS, i was blown away by Tassie, would happily dive it again

but, i think we will drive/boat it next time as packing for drysuit diving & airplane restrictions just sucks!

hubby says in future he will dive with a ali plate - im happy to stick to the SS and not need any lead whatsoever (when in the tropics, which is where i usually do my dive trips to)

cheers

heheheehe

i wear and aeroskin suit in the tropics so its basically a fabric suit, a few mm thicker than lycra but not as protective as neoprene

my first dive last month in Vanuatu i found the bottom RHS of the plate was trying to grind itself into my back (just above my hip) and that was becasue the rig was still set up for my 5mm wetsuit diving. so i altered the strap a tiny bit and i didnt have that problem again

a few people tried to scare monger about a bpw without a neoprene suit ("it will rip up your back" one even said) but after that first dive it never gave me grief again

the bpw i took was actually Mr Aussie Zeagle loaner i borrowed (www.divetub.com.au for product placement) and today i placed my order with him for my very own bpw :multi:

My wife and I took both of ours to the caribbean on our honeymoon without any issues. I don't know how they work on just skin since neither of us ever dive without a suit of some sort on. It just doesn't seem comfortable to me do so. I wouldn't travel to dive without mine though...I'm partital to my gear. I doubt you'll be disappointed with a bp/w rig. I like mine so much in fact that I just ordered another complete rig for my doubles.

I've been to Australia, Indonesia, the Caribbean, Cozumel and Maui with my BP/W. No problem making the weight limit, although I have to admit I don't carry a lot of heavy camera gear. No problms getting in and out of the gear on a boat, or in the water. I never dive in a T-shirt or less, though, so I can't comment on that. I HAVE hiked a quarter mile down a hill to a dive site in my 3-mil, and been very comfortable.

I have traveled with a SS BP and a Kydex BP. No major different, except I have to put more weight in the camband weight pockets with the Kydex plate.

Single Tank Aluminum BP/W with Single-Tank-Adapter travels light and is easy to pack in a ready-to-dive state (ie. harness & D-rings already threaded through the BP) --if you need to and have time later at your destination to reassemble, you can un-thread your harness from the BP and just coil it up to give yourself more stowage room in your luggage/dive-bag. The Wing easily folds into fourths for tight packing as well. . .

I dive a SS plate and Oxychweq Mach V wing and have flown it from FL to CA, IL, AL for diving. It works fine for me and packs more compactly than my Genesis Recon Back Inflate BC. All of my gear (wetsuit, fins, weight belt-weights, BPW, boots, mask, etc.) fit very nicely in a medium size suitcase). Suitcase is right at the 50# limit. Regs & computer packed in my carry-on.

As far as diving w/o a suit, I have used mine a couple times with either a Tshirt or a lycra skin. No big deal either way.
