Driftwood has it right. Basically buying the UK lights and upgrading will be more expensive and less effective than just buying (for example) the Penetrator at the best price you can find online.

That will make a good primary light for your stated usage and will make a good backup light if you should ever decide to get a more powerful primary.

All the plastic UK stuff is just going in the wrong direction (IMO). We all accumulated a pile of cheaper UK lights in the beginning.

You may want to check this out as well for a cheap SL4 LED upgrade. Cheap DIY LED Upgrade

I have done this upgrade and it is bright. I have a Dorcy Dive II 220 on its way, so I can test my DIY UK SL4 against it. If you are going to buy the Dorcy, then it is cheaper to get it from Dorcy Direct. I just paid $40 total after entering scuba for an instant discount and free shipping. You can also add free o rings and battery holder spares.

The problem on a night dive will be whatever light your buddy has will make yours seem like they are not turned on

I was on a night dive with a dive shop. I had a Princeton Tec primary (about $85) that had always provided enough light for me on night dives. I can only see so far anyway, even in broad daylight. The dive shop owner on the dive with us tried to shame me and my light as he was using one of those $1200 cannister lights (an d it did completely "wash out" my light). I said, "why should I buy a light like yours, yours is so bright I'll just dive next to you". HEHE
