i reciently completed AOW and Nitrox. The books that I read for the class seemed to have some errors...I COULD BE WRONG!....After reading the materials and completing the review sections I noticed that the printed correct answers and the selections available, did not match. Also during our Nitrox cert, the test had 2 answers that were wrong; IMHO. Has any instructor or student ran into the same? I will leave the specifics to the next post as I do not have the books on hand at this time.

Sure, but not just PADI. I think it might be more obvious at PADI for two reasons.

1) The sheer volume of readers will increase the numbers of people noticing and speaking up.

2) Because of that volume, PADI is continuously re-printing materials and at the same time accepting bids for new printers to do the work. New printers don't just get the materials with an order for re-print... they have to do the typesetting, layout and mistakes show up. Remember the simple RDP tables mis-print a few years back?

When I did my IE, they handed me a "Wheel" that checked out okay with all the little dot dealywhigs lining up. It still wouldn't give me one of the multiple choice answers shown. The examiner watched me work it, he tried it and got the same "wrong" answer.

With volume and constant change, mistakes do creep in.

All of the good agencies react quickly.

As soon as the errors are corrected a new copy will be available and instructors get to purchase brand new improved instruction materials :)

Walter:
Errors in text books are common.

Textbooks are among the worst edited manuscripts in all of publishing.

they are even worse when translated, commeon things like dive mask get translated to "spectacles" or "eyeglasses" etc.

No books are perfect.

.

There certainly are some contradictions, that's for sure!
In the basic open water course, the PADI manual says that direction cannot be determined by sound.
In the dive master course one of the answers on the exam with respect to finding direction is, you guessed it, "sound".

I showed it to the course director but still didn't get credit for a correct answer.

When PADI first started writing about nitrox they would refer to a mix as EANX50 or EANX70. Of course, the X should have been used only for an unknown quantity and not be included when the number was known. (hence my screen name)

Are you an unknown quantity of girl? ;)

I agree.. I've seen errors in all of my textbooks, including the diving ones. No biggie..

Unfortunately girl is stretching the truth. I'm EANx40 wishing I was Eanx29. The town crier and bearer of the standard of truth (my seven year old) inevitably blurts out "my mom's 40" for no reason whatsoever whenever I meet someone new. Where's a little inaccuracy when you need it most?
