I agree with the first part of your post wholeheartedly but disagree with the second part. The root of the entire problem is that you care. This whole dog and pony show that everything should be made in the US is stupid and it's hubris that American's think they can build stuff better than anyone else. The first lesson of macroeconomics is if Country A is better at building widgets and Country B is better at building thimbles, they should do that, and trade with one another.
I see, hmm. So once upon a time Country A made really good widgets and Country B (plural) made really good thimbles but then Country B decided to tariff punitively Country A widgets. But Country A mostly benevolently ignored the punitive tariffs and continued to pay for the defense of the free world while Country B (plural) continued to underspend their agreed upon spending. Then one day, Country A said, hmmm, since we pay for your defense, your punitive tariffs and all of that and now we cannot make our widgets because the IP has been stolen and copied by Country C, we are going to impose reciprocal tariffs. And of course Country B (plural) and Country C throws a hissy fit, how dare Country A do such a thing after six decades of us cheating them. How dare they.
Meanwhile I just want my parts from Country C. I do not care where it comes from. It can be exported from Hades for all I care. Maybe countries should just drop all tariffs and taxes, both ways. And enforce patent and IP theft regulations most all have agreed to but do not.
