1. They still work, probably just not as easy as the new ones. Low on the list of things to replace - just bought a drysuit which sucked up the $$$. And you probably know my personal preference is for a seperate STA rather than the integrated one.Uncle Pug once bubbled...
to Ben... but that really isn't the solution. Get rid of the SS Halcyon buckles that come apart and get the SS ones that don't.
Leaving the STA on the tank does no good on a two tank boat dive.
Taking the tank apart from the wing is not really necessary for fills... I fill our rigs all the time by just removing the first stage and attaching the fill whip.... the only time this would be a problem is for shops that do hot fills and need to put the tank in water to cool it.
2. There's no need to remove the tank at all in this case - on the boats I dive, (usually) either I take my own tank (which is topped on the boat - Cypress Sea in Monterey has Nitrox on board), or (lately) I'm using a buddy's doubles setup. Only if travelling with a singles rig do I have to undo the cam straps to change tanks.
3. Land fills - my LDS still does wet fills and requires removal of the tank from the wing. Wet fills versus dry fills is another subject.
dkerr - I use FredT's recessed bolts in a lightweight STA. I can hold the bolthead with a finger while tightening. Loose wingnuts haven't been a problem to date, although I am going to start using SS split washers (found some at Ace Hardware) on the bolts as well for some extra grip. Anyway it works for me, YMMV.
