Headed out from boat at 270 when we should have gone 180 towards the buoy that said "reef." Ended up in 102fsw pretty quick with not much to see. Got narced after 10 minutes at arounf 98fsw, went up to 85fsw and was fine. Did the Safety stop and ended the dive after 24 minutes.

By the way the Pacific Star out of Redondo is a FANTASTIC boat. Great service. I was really impressed!

Swam through the cavern on surface using my reg since snorkel was flooding dure to surge through the cavern. The surge, kelp and the shallow depth made exiting the cave interesting. My dive buddy surfaced in heavy kelp and he looked like a sea monster rising from the deep! Got tired of dealing with the kelp so we explored down the wall to about 40fsw and then dropped to the bottom of the wall to about 60fsw and headed for the boat.

Jumped in and dropped to the bottom of the wall in about 59 FSW. Slowly headed up the wall until we found the entrance to the grotto in about 15fsw. Glad we brought the light along as the grotto was a little dark. Swam in the small entrance single file and saw alot of sea fans and not much else. Interesting to see the trapped air bubbles in the top of the grotto from divers. Swam out the large entrance and then dropped back down to the bottom of the wall at 60fsw explored the wall for a while and saw the usual Garibaldi and such. All of the sea fans in the area made for a really neat dive. Attached is a photo of a shy Garibaldi hiding behind one.

Dropped down, took a 220 heading to Deadmans. Viz, not as good as last week, but was doable. Saw the usual creatures plus another bug that had to be at least 10 pounds taunting me! ugh...

Lots of surge, poor viz, however...we spotted a medium sized octopuss, rock fish, scorpions, and a HUGE Cabezon!!! The phospheresence (spelling?) was AMAZING!!! Once on the surface, I did not want to get out, the sky was filled with thousands of stars...Beautiful! I just wanted to float on the surface forever. And they predicted Rain??? LOL Getting out of the surf is where I lost one of my fins. Oh well...made for an interesting evening.

I was leading a group from my local dive club. Due to the heavy surf and surge, I had our turn around time to be 1500 PSI rather than 1200. We made it out to Deadmans in good shape. Unfortunately, the viz was not that good, but we still had a good time. My buddy was the first to hit 1500 PSI, so we turned around. The rest of the club members were experienced divers, so decided to stay at Deadmans to poke around.

My buddy and I made it back, no problems. A little while later, I saw one of my club buddys surface in cresent bay. Two others still hadn't surfaced. Things appeared to be ok. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw two divers surface between the outer reef and Seal Rock, not good! The surf and the surge was really coming in strong. It took them about 30 minutes if not longer to get out of that area. Unfortunately, they were low on air and could not descend to head east. Whew! What a day! Not a whole lot to see, but I did enjoy diving. We topped the morning off with a good breakfast at Coco's. Oh, did I mention that it had started to rain once we surfaced???

Surge: 3-4 feet in the 20 FSW or less area. It appears that the rumors may be true and a weak red tide is starting. A little brownish scum on the water and, visibility was hampered from suspended translucent particles.

Comments: First time at this site. Arrived at 0900 and checked out the waves. Spotted 3 whales near the shore. First seen about 6-10 feet from the corner buoy at the main beach. Used the stairs next to the Gazebo marked main beach and then walked over next to the rocks to the west and entered the water. Waded out FOREVER in the shallows and rocks until we finally got to shoulder deep water. Finned up and surface swam out to the South West between the two rocks. Dropped down in 19 FSW on top of some old rail road rails. Swam due west past bird rock across the front of rocky beach and over towards the rock pile. Then turned South and then back to our just south of our start point to exit closer to the main beach in a sandy area avoiding the rocks we had to wade over to get in. Usual suspects, and Sean Dyer’s keen eye spotted an nice size octopus in a hole in the sandy bottom. He was just drawing in his tentacle and the movement caught his attention. We admired this beautiful creature from just out side his hole. Saw the usual suspects. Waves picked up just a bit on the exit as expected to about 2 feet with the odd 3 footer. Great day to dive.

Met the usual group of guys at 7:00 a.m. for my every other Sunday dive. Man, I have never seen as many divers in the parking garage than what I saw this morning. There must have been 15 people from the 909 there. It was not worth the drive for them, though: Huge surf, little to no visibility and heavy surge. We entered on the far side of Goff Island with 5 people and only 4 of us made it past the surf zone. My buddy Ernie was right next to me when we got nailed by a 5' wave. He got taken all the way back to shore and I made it under. When he made it to the beach he waved to us that he was done so we swam out past the reef and dropped into 5' vis at 25 fsw. It got a little better once we made it to 35-45' and the rest of the boys were on the hunt for Halibut so I just cruised along with them until I hit turn pressure and and thumbed the dive. I did my 3 minute ascent from 30' and surfaced in a nice fog back about 300 yards from shore. Gotta love the compass!!!

Wrinkles, Arnaud, jextract, mainlightdave, and I all met at Point Dume after changing the site yesterday from Leo Carrillo due to anticipated conditions. By all reports we made the right choice.

What can I say, we dove the canyon off Point Dume beach and had a great time. Dropped down and immediately a 4 foot Guitarfish was spotted by Sean off to our right. Saw a large number of small Halibut and Talbot. Interesting crabs buried in the sand and the visibility was 20 to 30 feet and just a great dive. Whales were observed just prior to our getting into the water.
