Interesting, beyond a certain point however, I'm not sure how worthwhile maximum flow is as a metric for the average recreational dive. Most modern regs will supply more than enough air for 2 people to breath from. As the in family results were mainly quite similar, I also wonder if there are any real statistical differences in the results.

As a metric, i'd be more interested in WOB, & how it's depth effected. Do's it breath dry in all positions, etc. Things that will have a real time affect on it's use, rather than extreme limits , few if any, are ever likely to need.

I'm rather sceptical about the whole thing... FWIW the 'official' Apeks ANSTI figures (at 50m) are:

XTX200: 0.41 Joules/litre
XTX100: 0.53 J/l
XTX50: 0.65 J/l
XTX40: 0.85 J/l
XTX20: 0.96 J/l

Hope this helps.

I wonder what 1st stage was being used with the 20/40/50. I'm thinking it's hard to account for the differences, as operationally, the 2nd stages are all the same.

My thoughts exactly, the 50/100 and 200 are all identical 2nd stages so the difference must be in the 1st stage. I could be wrong but I believe from Apeks factory the XTX 50 and 40 use the same sealed swivel turret 1st stage so the difference must be in the 2nd stage. The XTX20 uses an unsealed version of the same 1st stage and bar the heat exchanger is the same 2nd as the XTX40. I know you can mix and match and buy as separates but would have thought Apeks posted WOB figures would be using their standard configurations. Perhaps it's in the tuning? Im confused:confused:

my xtx-20 came with the US4...i "converted" my 2nd stages to xtx50's minus the heat exchangers.

Does seem like some confusing figures.

When Apeks were first marketed in the US Zeagle found that the non swivel 1st stage flowed more gas than the swivel version...depending on how the ports lined up internally. In other words as the swivel was rotated the there was a small rise and fall in the flow rate.

Since all Apeks 1st stages flow more gas than a tank valve any difference in performance has to be due to IP drop and speed of recovery.

All the full size 2nd stages should have identical gas flow numbers.
