Assuming I can get both serviced equally well and the price is close, is there any reason to preffer the Apeks at40 or at50 over the Aqualung Legend or Legend LX? If I read the specs I don't see much difference
but maybe someone here has actualy used both.

I haven't used both, and I think that you will find that whoever has used either will swear by them. Apeks myself and I am happy with it. Really simple and reliable. If you can get the Legend at the same price as the 50 go for it as it is usually even more expensive than the ATX200.
Theonly downside is that the heat sink and env. kit are stock on the apeks and you have to get the supreme to get the same on the legend. Not that it matters jdging by your location.

Had a chat with someone that has the legend, since they are very similiar internally. The one thing I prefer over the apeks is you don't need anything special [or any tools at all for that matter] to get the faceplate off and get into the cavity of the second stage to clean out sand or whatnot.

I think the Legend is the finest, easiest breather you can buy, at any recreational depth.

Chris,

I own an ATX200, ATX50, Legend and Legend LX. I usually dive the ATX200 and my son usually dives the Legend LX, but I've used both and I personally think the breathing characteristics of both are almost indistinguishable. As a matter of fact, all four of those regs breath the same for me. They're all dry sealed and they all have large heat sinks on the 2nd stage. Internally, the second stages are near identical. I like diver adjustable 2nd stages so I like the ATX200, ATX50 and the Legend LX better than the Legend or ATX40. The legend series has a soft purge cover, the apeks have a button purge, I like the button better. The apeks has a metal adjustment knob, the Legend has a plastic knob, I like the metal one better. The legend has a sightly wider exhaust T than the Apeks so there's slightly less bubble interference, although I don't find the bubbles from the Apeks to be a problem for me.

Since Apeks is now distributed be Aqualung, anywhere you get one serviced, you should be able to get the other serviced.

I personally prefer the Apeks, my son prefers the Legend. Whichever you choose, you won't be unhappy.

Good luck

I have just passed the one year mark on my Legend Supremes (two sets). In fact, I have just put about four dives or so on them since their return from annual service.

During the past year, I have breathed from these regulators to a depth of just under 220 feet. They have consistently been smoothe breathing from cracking pressure through exhalation during all dives. I have had no problems or break-downs since their purchase.

I like the environmentally sealed first stage. Also, the first stage is plastic covered, which resists resists scratching better than chrome over brass.

The one time that my backup regulator began to freeflow a bit was when I was being towed by a scooter in current. I just detuned the second stage a bit with the adjustment knob, rolled its angle a bit on my neck and that was the end of the problem on that single incident.

Though I have the cold water version, the closest thing to cold water diving we have here in Miami is about the low 60s for a few moments on the bottom once or twice a year (poor me ;) ). I would ask anyone that does cold water diving how reliable these are in that environment if that is something important to you.

The second stage is a bit heavy to some, however, I find that using a moldable mouthpiece makes the problem non-existent for me. The one thing that is less than perfect about these regulators is that hose routing comes out not quite as tight as I would hope for.

Overally, I am very happy with these regulators. I don't know if they are still number one, but, last year, at the time that I bought them, they were rated the easiest breathers on the market (0.74 J/litre). Take a breath at depth from these and then try someone else's regulator at depth; you will definitely notice a difference.

How does this not work with the Apeks...

I have a legend lx supreme, 4 ds4/atx50 combos and have tried the atx 200 as well.

Out of all of them the legend is my favorite performer.

For value you can't beat the ds4/atx50. The 200 is not mechanically superior although it may be subjectively so since it's owners spent quite a few more dollars for the brushed metal second stag knobs, first stage finish and extra hp port.
