I gotta agree with da Yooper again, you WILL be happy; the Apeks are still good regs.

Regarding
primary decision factor: servicability
, your club is working with old outdated information. Now that Viking has taken over as the exclusive distributor for Poseidon, prices on parts have dropped by more than half & they're very easy to get.
Dealer cost on a 2nd stage service kit is barely over $4.

I knew that everything has changed with Viking, but the people I talked to [shop people, not club people] still implied that parts for the Poseidons were more expensive than Apeks and you've got to have people that _know_ how to service Poseidons [e.g. if your away on a trip]. Anyone that is a decent technician can figure out an Apeks, whereas if you are taking a Poseidon in for service, and they say they can service Poseidon, ask to see their tools. If they don't have the special poseidon tools, you probably don't want to be trusting them. He told me that more than one person has brought regs into him after vacations where they got looked at by a "qualified poseidon tech", and they came back not put together correctly.

It wasn't the cost that concerned me, it was the availablility. Well, that and the Apeks at the shop I went to was comparable to the Poseidon rather than $60 more [which I was looking at yesterday].

I just recently purchased an older (approx 1995) used (but mint condition) Odin 1st + 2nd + octo from a dive shop in MA and then had it shipped to Northern Atlantic Dive Expeditions--also in MA--for an inspection/annual prior to delivery to me in Texas.

Despite being land-locked (Dallas/Ft. Worth area) we have an abundance of local dive shops......but Poseidon is a 'cold-water' brand, and I was afraid my local Poseidon dealer just wouldn't have enough real-world experience working on them, so I had the 'annual' done in MA.

I paid a total of $131.00 for the 'annual' ($65 labor + $66 parts) to service 1st stage and 2 2nd stages.

I think this is about twice the price normally charged for an 'annual' on a reg set...although prices depend a lot on the brand and where you live--cost of living in your area.

As it is life-support equipment, I feel it is money well spent. I've only tested it in the pool since the' annual'....but am planning an open water dive for the May 4th weekend, so I hope to give it a real workout then.
