Craig,

The whole darned issue is more about lawyers and liability than anything else. Get the reg and use it for anything you want.

dc4bs,

I ran into a problem just like yours. I wanted a DS4 w/ ATX50 to use for deco, because I'm going to be taking the IANTD Advanced Nitrox class which calls for using 50/50. However, when my LDS looked in the Aqua Lung catalog, he found that the "nitrox version" of the regs was not listed. So he called and this is what he was told... from the factory the regs can be used up to 40% with no modification. Once the regs have been used with non-filtered air though, they can (and I use the work "can" in the sense of what Apeks claims) only be used up to 23%. To use the regs from the factory with > 40% the O-rings need to be replaced with O2 compatible O-rings. To use the regs with > 40% after being used with non-filtered air, the regs need to be oxygen cleaned and have the O-rings replaced with O2 compatible O-rings.

If you look on the Apeks website (Apeks, not Sea-Quest) you'll find this, which I believe is what you are looking for...

Standard Apeks regulators can be professionally converted to oxygen service and oxygen compatibility kits are available to Apeks dealers together with instructions for O2 use.

Yup,

We figured that out. What I find anoying is that even though you can apparently buy whatever reg you want anywhere else in the world, you can't buy certain ones in the USA only because a few morons screwed up and some lawyers saw a way to take advantage and make a quick buck...

I'll tell you this. If I ever get called in to be a member of a jury on any kind of case like that I'll be the plaintifs lawyers worst nightmare unless they can both prove negligence AND that the palintif did NOT sign a waiver stating that they KNEW BEFOREHAND that whatever they were doing was dangerous and that they could get hurt.

My vote is go back to the way it was in several of the 13 colonies and make being a lawyer illegal (you could be thrown in jail just for being one).

This is one of the few areas where I think the "backwards" nations are way ahead of the game compared to the US. Rights are wonderful and all that but I think we take it way too far in some ways. I believe that everyone has the right to their own stupidity and that I shouldn't have to pay for it when they do screw up (through higher insurance rates, not being able to buy gear available anywhere else in the "free" world. etc.).
