If you only have your open water card you only have your learners permit. This is the direction it's going and I suggest everyone get used to it.

Log 75 dives, and get AOW IF you have done some minimum requirement. Period. No money (maybe other than a card fee).

The reality is that there are a Heck of a lot of divers out there with a ton of experience that have never bothered to get more than OW certification. I would likely have fallen into that crowd with the one exception that I live in CO, and so I took AOW more as an excuse to get some more dive time in living in an area where diving is absurd.

Let's face it, it is easier telling my wife I'm taking a class for a weekend vs. just saying I'm going to NM. It's easier to justify the expense in my mind, even if I understand it makes no sense. I also really wanted the Nitrox cert (which I am DAMN glad I have doing Jupiter dives). So I put 1+1+1 together and got 6, and did my AOW certification after only five dives.

Had I had a place to dive like most anywhere in FL, or S CA., I'd be 80 dives in by now, and I seriously doubt I'd ever go for more certification.
