As this the Mares compact reel that you're talking about?

If so, the price is 25.90 Euros shipped to any address in the USA (less that 30 US$)

Indeed, it seems amazon to the rescue, the dive shops I asked about it said they could not get it. But it' is the one I looked at, if you look carefully it has both a guide for the line and a locking mechanism both of these features are missing from

I know this thread is already "oldish", but I wanted to give my 2 cents.

I bought the Mares compact reel and while it seems nice, I have just converted it to a normal spool. The locking mechanism is not sturdy at all and came undone after a simple jump from the boat (thankfully the divemaster saw that as we got in the water and was able to reel it in and pass it to the boat crew). After that I remembered what my sidemount instructor told me: you can use that, but I wouldn't go into a cave with you as long as you have that thing.

Also, the reel mechanism is a little small to work effectively.

No firsthand experience, but I have heard good things about AP’s pocket reel:

SCUBA Diving Accessories from AP Diving

AP Pocket Reel
1st hand experience of AP pocket reel is that, I dont use spools any more. It has the best parts of spools and reels. Only minus is that it is only 45 meter long string. Racketing and winding works nicely. This plus self inflating dsmb from AP makes shooting dsmb really easy when on ccr. They both fit to drysuit pocket, but are hard to put back underwater (not on surface).

I’ve used the AP reel for search and recovery, and it was great. Haven’t shot a bag or anything off of it.

AP pocket reel is the absolute best. Same size as a spool but with a nice smooth handle and a birds-nest resistant design. Option to have the reel where the handle locks if you let it go or it can remain loose. Definitely a 5 star device.
