I like to release my spool as the bag flies and watch it slowly descend to me. I don't see how this improves on that. KISS: Keep It Stupid Simple!

I actually tried using one of those over 10 years ago, before I got into tech. In actual use a reel or just a plain spool is much easier to use. Those tended to unfold often and were fragile. The winding piece fell off easily.

Halcyon makes a more robust spool with a handle. You can extend your grip by using the double ender as a handle. You use your finger to wind back up, even with gloves. I have one, it's nice for a few specific areas but otherwise I rarely use it. Again, I find a reel or a regular spool simpler and easier to use most times.

I bought and used one for a short while. The handle was fine (if you made sure to hold it level, if not it lacked the rigidity to stay open), the little winding toy was just that it simply did not work well, so being a tinkerer I looked at the Mares compact finger spool and tried that, I can go on but at the end of the day I knocked out the handle and winder and converted it to a nice light finger spool.

I have since then upgraded to an even lighter and more compact finger spool that shaved of 48grams, but the quick summery is dont buy one, the manta reel is compact and works great if you want a relatively compact reel (but alas 260grams heavier and almost 3 times as thick as my current spool).

Got 2 of them and they work. Nowhere near as nice as a real gap reel but they work. The yellow handle thingimabob sticking out of the side folds over when you aren't using the modified spool.

I would suggest you look at the Mares Compact SMB Reel, it seemed better designed (locking mechanism) and higher quality, but we cant seem to get it in North America, sadly.
