Nice. I hate to bring this up, but you just painted cops with that broad brush you don't want used to paint Coz. That would be like saying because some dive shops have crooked employees, ALL dive shops must have some crooked employees. Faulty logic. Instead of saying that, you should focus on the fact that the complaint was made by the criminals. Por Esto always repeats anything bad a prisoner has to say about the police. You are SURE Coz has some crooked cops?
I respectfully disagree with you Chief! Yes, I am SURE there is at least one crooked cop in Cozumel - not necessarily in this case, but absolutely and it is not faulty logic. For starters, I am not painting all cops with a broad brush as crooked and even qualified that statement - I said there are SOME crooked cops! Second, comparing dive shop employees to cops is apples to oranges. Cops have at least some authority regardless of rank and can (if they are crooked) intimidate people into things for the fear of being arrested simply because they don't know any better. Your general dive shop employee or employee in any consumer business doesn't have that intimidation/fear factor going on. Sure, thre could be thieves among employees, this too happens all over the world - but not all employees are thieves. There are good and bad people in every industry, in every city/town - it's an unfortunate part of life.
As far as crooked cops here - any cop that accepts or encourages a bribe is crooked - and we all know that happens from time to time with locals and tourists - do we agree there? Of course they are not all like that and I am not claiming that they are.
Speaking of bribes - if you (general public) are ever pulled over by a cop and they encourage a bribe or threaten you in any way, ask them to follow you to the police station right then - they will either back down or write you a ticket if warranted.
