Sounds like a wonderful opportunity for a local scuba club to make friends and give some sort of award of thanks to that sailboat crew.

Racing sailors take these races very seriously and it was a noble sacrifice for them to drop out and investigate the status of the divers. That should be encouraged and rewarded.
