That's right people, I hate deer as of last night. Bambi's mom jumped out of no where and broke my baby. Now my car is in the body shop. Luckily she wasn't killed, but man they are big animals. Anyone else have the pleasure of a one on one confrontation with these big beasts?

Backstrap is good stuff. :) Might as get some return on the repair bill. I'l bet the deer didn't carry liability insurance either.

BTW deer that "survive" a vehicle impact and stagger away generally die a slow death from starvaton and internal injuries. I'ts much more humane to give them the fast one with the .22 behind the ear or machete.

Moose OTOH tend to not only break vehicles, they break passengers too when they come through the windshield.

What I hate is having to "dispatch" one after being struck and injured by a car. I was on my way back from a dive trip in Nanaimo this last Sunday. One of the roads east bound thru Washington State was closed after a couple motorists struck a herd of elk. I had visions of what a mess that was.

FredT once bubbled...

By the time the police got there she was gone. I didn't get out of the car because I know what a angry or hurt animal can do. I am not a cruel person and didn't want the animal to suffer but I am also not stupid enough to get out and try to find her at night.

Will generally move 50-75 yards, then lie down. Simply wait 5 minutes and then start trackng.

Bow hunters depend on this to collect game.

Back in the dark ages I had to dispatch a deer with a broken back with a 2" long pen knife blade after a vehicle impact. Never again, doe hoves HURT!

I now habitually carry much better tooing either on me or in the vehicle. A .22 derringer is enough to move you out of harm's way, and is also enough to humanely dispatch any north american member of the deer family if the round is properly placed. A .45 allows more leeway in placement.

But not going over the hood of my car. I love watching them graze.

I would have loved to put her down, because she was injured, there is no way she could have gotten away and not have been, but in Canada, we are not allowed to carry firearms. Plus I honestly don't feel good even holding one.

I don't hate them, but I haven't had my car wrecked yet either.
Usually my fog lights pick up their eye balls.
I think I've just been lucky. I've been waiting for one to jump out from behind a bush.
You have to be extra careful during sunrise and sunset, especially if you're riding a motorcycle.

Now, raccoons are crazy, they just seem to want to headbutt my tires.

They can carry it for years with little outward effect.

Strangely enough when the PETA types banned trapping in the NE US rabies cases in both animals and people went up sharply. Probalby no cause and effect here...

BTW there are more deer in the US now than there were when Columbus landed. In many areas they have grown into a serious highway safety problem, not to mention their drain on agriculture and damage to decorative vegitation.

Harvesting them is a good thing!
