After half a year of pleasure diving, my buddy and I want to go out and do a skills dive tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone has been to Vets today? I know the conditions were really bad yesterday but am hoping it will turn diveable by tomorrow. Any info on conditions would be much appreciated
I looked around noon and it was a mess. Waves, whitecaps and filthy water. It is supposed to calm down by Wednesday, but it will likely still be dirty. The winds are from the north, so you may want to look at Cabrillo. It's protected by Pt. Fermin so it doesn't get very surgey.
Thanks Bottomtime. I might have to check out Pt.Fermin then. What depths does it get too out off the Point? I need to get atleast to 55-60ft to test out my new Ikelite housing. Did you check out any other spots today? Was anything diveable conditions?
The red buoy is at 50 feet.
It's a long swim to reach any depth on the southside. The shortest swim/hike is White Point. The outer edge of the kelp about 200 yards east of the cove is 45 feet.
Be careful with the entry at White Point, though! Plan your dive to get out at or near high tide....it definitely makes the entry/exit much more manageable. I've had some great dives at White Point but have rarely gotten very deep (I think the max I've gone is mid-40's, but I never needed to get deep so I didn't try).
Swell model does look kinda crappy for a bit....and I'd imagine after the storm yesterday that it'll take a couple days to settle down. Do you need to dive tomorrow or would you be able to wait a couple days till things settle down? Vet's is definitely a good place if you just need to be able to get deep fairly quickly to make sure the housing is water tight (I assume you're not taking the camera on the test run???).
At low tide I prefer to enter on the other side of the point near the fire road. There are a lot of urchins, but you can get to the better reefs much faster than swimming from the cove. I agree with Nicole, there is no easy exit here during low tide. I prefer to swim right up to the cement blocks, take my fins off and walk out. At low tide you have a long walk over uneven rocks while the surge tries to knock you down. It's not too bad unless you are in a drysuit and carrying a camera. Otherwise you can basically snorkel into a foot of water and stand up.

I don't really need to dive tomorrow... I think I'm gonna wait till atleast Wed or Thurs and see if it settles down.
Yeah I just need to get deep to make sure the housing is water tight. I will def. not be taking the camera on this test run. The problem is that the Ikelite housing has the TTL hoteshoe electronics built into the housing.... so if I get a flood on this test run.. I still have to send the housing in for the electronics to get repaired.
