I don't think I ever have....

how is the sales tax calculated exactly? ...any ins and outs?
I already am having the guy take the shipping off of the bill of sale...why pay tax on that twice, right?

So, do they get you when you register?

Unless it is registered already? I'll Google, but I want the street version too.

if you buy someplace like Oregon, no sales tax, and that's where many of the shipping boats come from to here. about 800 to ship most cars from there-- another plus usually can get a better deal as many dealerships and usually no dealer markup like they get us with here since there's no comp

It is being shipped as we speak. No sales tax was charged but it is used, so I am not sure what will happen when I go to register it. It does not seem the ask for a bill of sale if the title is already in our name.

Now what did you buy?:shakehead:

Ducati 999

...and a Ti Merlin Ultralight.

Combat pay fiesta

I think that the sales tax might not be in the loop.

They might get us when we register it, not sure though.

JB wants me to put it in the house. he he

Where I live, if you buy a vehicle out of state, or any used vehicle via private party, you pay the sales tax when you register the car, plus tag fee, plus state title fee.

I'm sure your state is similar because they aren't going to let you get away without paying taxes that they just love to charge.

If you don't have proof of paying sales tax somewhere then Hawaii will take it once you register it here.

well, I am sure whatever they do it will be a big fiasco.

I think our sales tax is less in Hawaii than California.

The CA statewide sales tax rate is currently 7.25%. However, the rate is higher in locations where voters have approved additional "district" taxes.
ours is 4.5 or something?

But, Jay think about it...active duty military couldn't be paying sales tax on every used vehicle they ship to a new place.

Tanimoto said there is no use tax exemption for "used" cars, although there are several cases in which a car purchased out of state may not be subject to the use tax.

One would be if a private vehicle were brought into Hawaii for nonbusiness use by a person who acquired it outside the state while a "bona fide resident" of another state or country; if that person acquired it for use outside the state; and if that person "made actual and substantial use" of it outside Hawaii.

I wonder if the title would have to be in our names already, as opposed to just signed over from a dealer?

Military is a different beast. We have a few options.

If my vehicle is registered in my home state then can keep those plates and send them the fee every year. Doing this I am only required to pay for any checks (safety, smog, etc) that the current state requires.

I can also register my vehicle as an out of state resident (like I do here). By doing that I pay a plate fee ($20.50) to plate my vehicle in Hawaii. My title and previous registration, however, will show if I paid sales tax.

Key note however, I don't have to have proof that I paid sales tax at my new location, only at some location. Even then, that only matters if I plan on registering the vehicle at my new location as a resident of the new location.

C,
We ordered our Mini Van while in Germany and had it for 3 years there, when we shipped it to Alaska, had there been a sales tax we would have paid it there. i.e., if we had shipped it to Hawaii, we would have paid sales tax there.
Texas just hit me with "New Resident" fee on our 4 vehicles, $90 each...........plus reg. fees.....
