Only when I wear a head lamp then I'll put the mask under my hood.

Joining this thread kind of late, but you may want to try the IST hood designed for the ProEar2000 mask. This is actually two thin hoods joined at the neck.

It has ear-holes cut on the inner layer to allow the PE2k mask to cover the ears (this mask has ear cups to help with equalization) and then the outer layer goes over everything.

This gives you both security from having your mask kicked off and a good seal against the cold. I dive mostly in the NE and the water is ~45 F and I don't have an issue with the cold with this hood.

To the point about the snorkel - I just use a fold up that I keep in my BC for the once in a lifetime event when I need it.

Like I said you may need one if you are doing allot of surface swiming. I think that PADI's requirement that everyone have a snorkel on every dive is flawed. I dont have much need for one when diving caves or wrecks:D

Its like wearing a seat belt. I think the point is that you never know when you might need it - so maybe it is best to err on the side of caution. At least for those of us without a lot of experience. I feel much more comfortable on the surface knowing its there if I need it.

wow- i feel silly that i thought you had to have snorkel with you. it was my most recent dive with a new buddy, met on this site, who kindly hinted that I didn't necessarily need to dive with it. And I thought he was living on the wild side not bringing one.

I was sooooo not cool wearing one. having read this thread, I'm excited to have my mask on the inside and to replace the pain in the butt snorkel that i've so obligingly secured each time, with a folding one. another expense coming my way...

My problem is when I wear my mask under my hood, the exhaled air gets trapped between my head and the hood, giving me an alien-head look. Its embarrassing and not at all fashionable! :D

With the strap under my hood, my mask kept flooding when I turned my head too far to either side. It annoyed me enough that I swapped it around to the outside mid-dive.

I can't help but wonder if a "mask leash" would be useful in case you end up working for the Chuck Norris Dive Institute. (Something like a bit of bungee attaching the back of the strap to a necklace, perhaps?)

Sounds like a great idea , I wonder if someone reading this hasn't already decided to market it? The Chuck Norris Dive Institute - Chuck sounds cool :14: but its probably mostly newer divers in limited viz who are most likely to kick off someone's mask.....

You can take your hood to a reputable tailor and ask them to put a grommet (?) upside down in the top of your hood to act as a vent. You want the jaggedy edges of the metal to be on the outside of your hood and the smooth part to be near your hear to prevent your hair from catching on it. I had the same alien/conehead problem until I did this and it works.

Was reading a book about diving the Andrea Doria the other day and it mentioned that one of the divers was told to wear her mask under her hood (so the strap was inside). Turned out later she got hit hard by another diver (that ended up dying) and probably would have lost her mask entirely it it hadn't been held on by the hood.

Now obviously there is a case to be made for carrying a spare mask, etc. but I am just curious if anyone does this routinely. I don't think I've seen anyone do it yet. If not, why not (particularly if you don't carry a spare mask)?

thx

I don't routinely wear my mask under my hood. But I have worn it under my hood when the current is strong. By strong, I mean ripping. For this purpose, on warm water dives, I always bring a hood with me as well.

In a ripping current, your spare mask would not do you that much good either. But wearing a hood over your mask in those cases is an excellent protocol.

The hood does not preclude the snorkel. There is no problem.

If you really feel bashful about a snorkel, you can put a bolt snap on it and clip it to a D-ring.
