If the currents are strong and/or the temps are not too cold, I'll stick the mask on before the Hood/beanie.

Anytime that I wear a hood or a beanie, I put the mask strap underneath. It saves adjusting the strap for dives without the hood/beanie. Also lots of time when I'm diving without a hood I'll find that my mask strap ends up floating over the top of my head. Not intentionally of course, it's just that I don't like the strap to be too tight and don't even really need it to seal the mask to my face. I've even seen a few dive ops who like to dive without a mask strap all together.

I had thought of doing this. Glad to hear others are doing it. I think I'll try it. But I'll still carry a spare.

I wear my mask with the strap under the hood and carry a spare mask.

Yup, lots of people do, including several of my buddies and most of the instructors that I have taken classes with. I don't just because I don't like the gap it makes in my hood where cold water can come in and catch me.

Depends. Usually I do, but sometime I don't. Try it both ways to find what works.

I tried wearing my mask strap under my hood -- but couldn't figure out what to do with my snorkel

Oh NO! You're joking, aren't you?

:D

Steve Bilinda will be proud of all of you. You all get a pizza stained T-shirt.

To think some serious DIR/cave types doing an old NE wreck diving trick.

On a more serious note, many do put the strap under the hood, especially if you are training divers or working in limited vis. The first time you get a mask kicked off by a student and start chasing it, you will too. For me, it is how I dive since about 1985 or so. The only time I don't, is in real cold water, <40F, when I want a full seal around my face.

As for the diver on the Doria, Sally would have most likely died if she had lost her mask. She was working with another diver in the gift shop at about 200' when another diver got out of control and real negative and bashed on top of them. Sally recovered at about 230' and managed to make it out. The out of control diver did not. This was in the late 80's and everyone was on air and Narced silly to begin with.

I do when making beach entries in large surf ... otherwise, no.
