Hi there,
I will be on Catalina Island on July 15th and will be bringing all my gear. All I will have to do is rent a tank. My wife doesn't dive and so I will need a dive buddy, since I like to be safe. What would you recommend? Anybody going to be out there that day?
Thanks,
Jeff Wood

Welcome Jeff to So.Cal. forum....July 15th is Friday...are you just going over to Avalon for the day or planning to jump on one of our many dive boats for the day?? I see from your profile that you are are okay with cool water diving, have you ever dove in the SoCal waters? Let us know a bit more of your plans and your experience and I'm sure you can find someone to dive with...heck, I might even get "sick" that day and DWADD (ditch work and dive day) :D. For more input check out our "sticky" here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/socal/231885-updated-great-catalina-island-info-sticky-thread.html

I'll be doing some research diving that day and won't be available. You may be able to get a pick up buddy when you arrive at the park, or get a guide from one of the shops in town.

Yea, I will just be In Avalon for the day (Friday) and staying at a hotel that night and then heading back to the mainland on Saturday.
Yes, I am mostly used to diving in cold water lakes. My wetsuit is a 7mm. I thought I would try out that dive area that has the steps right into the water. Some kind of protected national park.
Thanks,
Jeff

Conditions have been pretty wonderful this weekend so hopefully you'll experience the same. The dive park is slated to become an official state marine protected area October 1st, but has been treated as a de facto reserve by most divers for decades.
