You have one of the best dive shops in the area, probably just down the road from you. Head to Underwater Works, its on Highway 98 in Montrose/Fairhope

Been there - thanks (yes, they are just down the road)
That's who I went to Vortex with about a month ago. Dove with Julian and a couple of his students. Didn't sound like Chas usually had used equipment for sale??? Since I'm just getting into diving more I thought I'd buy used until I figured out what I really want.

Every so often, they offload rental gear.

At Ft. Pickens, we'll be diving on a mostly submerged jetty. We'll be over a spread out rubble field of decent sized rocks, with all kinds of stuff on, under and around them. There's some other more 'artificial' objects in the area, too. an old jeep frame, a golf cart, a couple of tires (octopus seem to love those). Visibility can be between 5 and 30 feet- - - due to the tides on Thursday, I'd hope for 15+. Max depth is around 50', we'll probably average somewhere in the 40' range.

One tip for you regarding the diving at Ft. Pickens: make sure you have a pair of gloves. There shouldn't be much current while we're diving, but there certainly can be. It's not uncommon to hold on to the occasional rock out there- - - and they're covered with all kinds of stuff that you may want to protect your hands from. Water temps will probably be in the mid 80's. There may or may not be jellyfish present: it is the time of year for them. That being said, you may want to consider some form of protection, like a skin of thin full body wetsuit.

Currently, we're planning of diving 2 tanks, so you'll want to rent / fill accordingly. There will not be an opportunity to visit a dive shop in between dives.

Here is a link to the thread we have going for this trip Thursday:

If you've got any other questions, just post in there!

+1 for Gulf Coast Divers and +1 for Atomics. You really save money in the long run because they only need half the service of other regs. Additionally, they are the best (imho) breathing regs around (though the difference is most apparent at high breathing rates and deeper depths).

Whatever you do: Make sure to attend Vortoberfest http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/tr...deep-dixie/307604-vortoberfest-vi-2010-a.html

It's a GREAT way to meet new divers and find groups that you get along with. I can't stress this enough. I've met some of my best diving friends at VortoberFest and SpringFest (the food is pretty awesome too)

Oh , BTW. I glanced briefly at the used regs @ gulf coast the other day. Two were old US divers regs. Don't remember about the third. At least one of them had a computer with it. I don't have a clue about pricing. There were several sets of fins in the used bin, also.

Thanks Carl!

Were the US divers regs worth looking at?

Let me know how your dive goes tomorrow! I have a feeling I'm gonna regret not going.

One has a US Divers Micra for the primary. I have one on perma-loan from a buddy of mine. Its ok- breathing, but you've got to remember what I'm comparing it to (Kate dove the Micra for the past year).
Any used reg from them should be serviced up- - so you'll have a year before putting any more $$ into it. The brand "US Divers" is now owned by Aqualung, and they no longer produce any regulators under the US Divers brand. Many places still have parts, but I would expect that availability could become an issue in the future.

I don't know if I mentioned this, but they have a 15' indoor pool in which you are welcome to test any and all gear before you buy. Actually they highly recommend it. SOO. . when you come over this way, bring a bathing suit and a towel with you. It will help with fin & reg comparisons and selection.
