Give him a break. He's never been there before. He came to ask. Yeah, the questions seem funny to us, but if you've never been there before - how do you know?

BTW, for best safety - carry your safety sausage on every dive, dive within your personal limits and work closely with your buddy, don't get lost, drink bottled water, hydrate early & often, avoid street vendors of food & beverage, use sun screen after diving - not before as bad for reefs, don't drink much beer, eat & rest well, wear seat belts in cabs and vans, drive defensively on the way to the airport, look both ways before crossing, wear white shirt at night, don't even think about getting on a moped, etc.

Should be really nice without the pod people.

We love going to coz and sincerely hope it doesn't hurt this wonderful island.

Do we still need to give him a break?;) Truthfully, he does make a good point. We had heard from people we know that live on the island that there is a correlation between theft in the form of break-ins during off-peak seasons because of the lack of work. Stands to reason that this will result in the same. HOWEVER, and this is very important; it is NOT theft towards and against tourists... they're not about to ruin or take a chance with their number one industry. And it nothing unique to Coz or Mexico... it happens all around the world whenever unemployment rises. It's called survival.

Ok so he has been there, oops. Still, he didn't mean to insult - just ask for insight.

I don't understand the perceived terror of venturing off of Melgar. I live 'way back' on 75 and have several fellow expat friends who live near here. We eat at local restaurants, walk down the streets at night, etc etc. There's nothing scary out here.

I just think it's funny that anyone would think the cruise ships keep us "safe." If anything, the streets are far more dangerous when the pod people are here rolling out of Carlos & Charlie's with their empty yards of "margaritas" and their balloon animal hats, walking out in the middle of the street as if this is Disneyland...now THAT scares me! :rofl3:

Careful....as we learned on another forum, talking "bad" about tourists is destroying Cozumel's economy from the inside out! :rofl3::eyebrow:

(I know I shouldn't have......but I just couldn't resist! :D)

I swear the forums are such good entertainment! :D

la diver you original post has sure stirred emotions here, I too was at first bewildered by your question, then it hit me, you probably have been to Cozumel before, but only for the day by cruise, right? maybe more than once....?

On Cozumel, a lifetime of peace, tranquility and safety do not change overnight because of a crisis (we have dealt with crisis before and pulled through quite well), or because one day the cruise ships don't come, as has been stated here in several ways. The cruise ship industry made Cozumel the #1 cruise destination in the world (most arrivals, pre-Wilma), because they KNOW Cozumel is SAFE.

And the sad irony is that knowing so, they turn around and tell the cruisers not to venture off the main strip because it's "not safe", they LIE to the cruisers, to keep them in the waterfront stores that PAY to be advertised on board. This is what really bugs me about the cruise ships, I have no issues with the cruisers, I worked for a couple years with a cruise tour, and for the most part it's just nice folks on vacation, a few rude ones, same as everywhere.

The Cruise Lines should be HONEST and tell people it's safe to go back in town and not give people the impression that there's danger (like in other Caribbean islands), thus smearing Cozumel, BUT that they recommend these stores and that they are their "bonafide" sources which they back up in case of a problem, no secret that there's a business arrangement, no need to create a false impression of "danger" if people walk off the main strip.:no::no::no::no:

OK off my :soapbox: :hijack: over, :focus:

I was not offended in the least with the OP's question. S/he made a reference to what happens in his/her neck of the woods in trying times. Look at where s/he's from...memories of Katrina are probably fresh. No, people in Coz don't behave same as the rabble in New Orleans.
