Any reason for a newer diver not to go with a streamlined setup?

What you say is what a lot of folks use. Nothing wrong with it. Just to put some variety in the discussion, I will say that it is not what I do for the following reasons. My primary has a seacure mouth piece that fits my mouth custom. I am missing a couple of teeth. Somebody else might have trouble putting it in their mouth. Somebody with a small mouth probably cannot even use it. Even more important it is very hard to get it out of my mouth if I do not want to let it get out. My philosophy is simple. Keep air flowing to me. Makes it easier for me to deal with other situations and less to worry about.
For cave diving or for folks who expect to encounter more frequent air shares (like working guide DMs) a long hose becomes essential/useful respectively.
