Any input on scubapro rec wing?

I was in my lds looking for a dive rite trek wing. He said he could get it and gave me the price. Then told me about a discontinued scubapro rec wing, supposedly similar to the trek wing. Oh yeah, it was a bit cheaper than the dive rite. Has anyone used these?

I've got one of those... used it for years. Rather bulky and cumbersome for warm-water diving. It's okay for cooler waters. Has an absurd amount of flotation built into it for singles diving... you can get almost your entire torso out of the water when fully inflated. Woohoo.

Back in the late '90's I paid around $300 for the bladder. You can probably get a superior bladder nowadays for roughly the same price.

Well, if you get a super-cheap offer on it, its condition is new, and you aren't doing warm water, singles diving, it's probably perfectly fine.

Wait for other folks to chime in about alternative bladders. I'm not so hot on the current models for this size-class. I use little travel wings now. My recwing is now in storage.

Alternative bladders will alse depend somewhat on type/model of harness you're mounting it to.

I would steer you toward the Oxycheq Signature Series (www.oxycheq.com), or the Halcyon Eclipse wings. They're good and sturdy, and compact. Thats what I will be getting for my bp/w setup.

I use a rec wing for cold water singles but largely because it is my retired doubles wing (replaced in that role with a 55 lb Halycon wing). I got it originally for $90.00, it is still in great shape, and I don't dive single tanks enough to justify buying a dedicated singles wing.

The Scuabpro Rec Wing tends to taco excessively when used with a single tank and using the bungees is a must to keep that to a minimum. On the plus side, air trapping is not generally a problem with the bungees in use and the bungee system is much more snag free than most other wings. The SP Rec Wing is well made and is essentially a Dive-Rite Rec Wing with only a few minor differences

For doubles, the Rec wing is a bit narrow and tends to get compressed between the backplate and tanks if the tanks are larger in diameter than 6.75" diameter steels or 7" Al 80's.

But despite the draw backs, if you only want one wing and want one that will work for both dive single tanks and smaller doubles, it does that more or less impossble job far better than most wings.

I’ve had a Scubapro Rec wing for a few years now and have never had any problems with it - the one thing that I really bothers me about it is using the tiny inflator opening when you have to manually inflate it; I guess I prefer the larger angled mouthpiece on Halcyon or Dive Rite inflators.
