Hi, just joined SB as I am looking for a retirement business somewhere, warm, sandy with great diving and finally have the time and the cash to do something I really want! I have struggled to find anything very relevant on the web as a whole, maybe they are all just making so much cash nobody wants to sell! Help/advice appreciated.

Hi D,

you may not have heard this phrase yet but the best way to make a small fortune with a dive business is to start with a large one...

The PADI Professionals website has a forum listing dive centre sales and business opportunities. If you aren't a PADI Pro, then find a friendly Divemaster or Instructor and ask them to forward you the details of any opportunities that are listed on there.

If I was going to invest in a dive centre, then I would want to make sure that I understood the industry inside-out. Owning a dive centre is not like owning a beach bar. My advice would be to consider getting yourself to at least Divemaster level... as that would allow you a decent level of understanding of the industry. At the very least, you would be able to keep a 'professional' eye on the staff that you employed and you would learn more about the 'market'.

welcome aboard

Thanks for the responses, in particular to Andy for his advice. I have every intention of getting to Divemaster as the very minimum before actually starting to operate any dive business. I am currently trying to decide if I freeze my wotsits off and do the course here in the UK or some nice warm, clear ocean elsewhere in the world!

I have heard all the cynical comments about how to make a small fortune - start with a big one, how to make a million - start with two and so on and so forth. So why are there so many philanthropists in the world opening dive centres, running them for the benefit of divers and staff and then selling them when they run out of money? Is it just what the ocean does to our brains? Somebody, somewhere, must make money!

Thanks, Don

Hi Don,

Sorry for the slow reply, I missed your last post in Sept. Going to do your courses in various locations around the world is a very good option. Use this opportunity to study how different dive centers operate in a tourist dominated industry. See what they do well...and what isn't so good. Useful lessons if you intend to open a dive centre.

You could also consider opening your own center from scratch. Enlist the help of a seasoned instructor to help you with the technicalities, but this will enable you to get everything right from the outset.

If you need any help or advice in the future, please feel welcome to drop me a PM.

Slow reply? I'll say :D It was September 2008! I wonder how it turned out for the OP. He had a total of 3 posts.
