If I was large and in charge I'd mandate it. 6 months in the jail and 6 months in court security then you get a shot at road patrol. I have seen people show up for work and quit same day. When a C.O. can walk into a dorm "off the chain" and roll in everyone with his voice all by his lonesome.... he has arrived.
The court time will allow them to see what happens as far as Defense atty's picking your case apart and the elements which matter.
