I saw a photo of a tech diver with a black mask with very small lenses. Looked to be super low volume mask.

Is there an advantage to such masks? The only thing I can think of is easier to clear. Do you lose field of view? How about prescription lenses?

Thanks

I would not say there are Tech diver mask and rec diver masks.

Personally i prefer a black silicone mask only because it does not go yellow after a couple of years. I also prefer a low profile mask just because of that reason its low profile and when diving locally here in currents it's a less chance of it being ripped off my face :D

The black skirt helps eliminate glare in the caves from lights. Low volume does make it easier to clear, especially when inverted.

And smaller masks are easy to stow in a dry suit pocket for a backup.

Thanks for all the replies.

Field of view about the same as the larger lens mask?

What brand mask do you dive?

Those very small low volume black skirted masks are actually freediving masks adopted by recreational scuba diving and tech because of their superior features.
So you can thank the freediving community for that technology.
The smallest ones are made originally by the european companies like Picasso, Omer, Cressi, and now the basic design has been adopted by virtually every other dive gear manufacturer out there, it seems everyone has a low vol mask these days.
I personally dive an Oceanic Shadow frameless. It's not an extreme low vol mask but still pretty low. It provides the best all around field of view I've found yet and the glass is right up to my eyes as close as it can get. Those really small masks don't fit my face well and besides, scuba diving provides plenty of air to equalize a mask. For freediving most of the reason their masks are so small is so they only require a teeny bit of precious breath hold air to equalize and to clear.

I have one of the small low volume mask with pres lens in it. At least the one I have limits my field of view by a good bit as compaired to my "normal" mask - Tusa Liberator II, so much so that I will not use it if I am diving with a class. It limits my field of view more than I find acceptable when I need to watch a wide area.
