I have been to AKR twice and FIBR (Fantasy Island Beach Resort) twelve or thirteen times. Both places are FANTASTIC for diving and offer three boat dives to three different sites each day. It's great to visit both resorts because the diving on the north side of the island vs. the south side is different and it's fun to explore those differences.

That being said, if I were going to visit Roatan as a non-diver there's no way I'd want to be at AKR. Even the air-conditioned cabins are too rustic for me. The only convenience in your room is an air-conditioner...and quiet. If this is what your bride will enjoy (after all, we're all different;)) then by all means go for it. I, on the other hand enjoy lounging around the amazing horseshoe shaped beach at Fantasy Island or even at the beautiful new swimming pool with the swim-up bar...where drinks are free as part of the all-inclusive rate. (Which is RIDICULOUSLY inexpensive) Then when I've had enough of the tropical sun, I like to wander in and grab my laptop computer and take advantage of the free WiFi at FIBR. (AKR charges you $250 as a deposit for a modem, besides what the weekly rate is...can't remember that part) It's always nice to check in at home and make sure everything is going OK with my elderly dad. Once I'm done on the computer, I might decide to return to the room and prop myself up on the king size bed for a nap. Or I could grab the remote control for the television and tune in to the news or one of my favorite shows. (All the networks in the U.S. are available)

Just my two cents as one who has thoroughly enjoyed both resorts...as a DIVER :D

I think she would love AKR. I would definitely book a room on the Key (with AC). Our room was two bungalows over from the shore dive location and it had a great covered deck with two awesome hammocks (just make sure she isn't out there when the sun is going down and the bugs come out). Or you might request a room closer to side by the dolphin key because she could see when you boat comes in and those rooms decks were more over the water.

The pool is on the Key, nice pool with several lounge areas and a snack bar that serves pretty good banana Diana's and hurricane's. They have a canoe and kayaks for you to use whenever you want on the Key also. They have a BBQ one night on the key with fire dancers, crab races and other entertainment once a week.

You take a minuscule boat ride to the main part of the resort where the hill superior rooms are (which have really steep stairs). The restaurant is there with open air dining, covered and uncovered. Food is really pretty good, very fresh and good tea or juice drinks. They have a gift shop on this side, FREE Horseback riding down the beach which was fun and FREE! I recall them having massages, not sure about a full spa but they definitely had massages. I think this was located near the chamber which is also on site just in case.

The dolphin museum is near the gift shop and they bring the dolphins over from their key for a show and education. You can take the same little boat over to the dolphin key and just sit on the dock and watch them swim or you can hang out on the beach. They also have a dolphin interaction available which I wouldn't miss (probably extra unless included in your package) and you can also snorkel with them or dive for additional money.

They take you to their other island, further from the resort, for a lunch BBQ and you can hang out on the beach or they have an animal rehab facility and more dolphins there as well. They arranged for non-diving spouses to meet up at the island after our morning dives. Unless she wants to go into a city and shop a lot, I think she'd have a good time. If she likes to read, listen to music, relax, hang out at the pool or any of those other activities she would have a good time. Buy the cactus juice bug repellent they sell in the snack shop near the dive shop. When it's dusk wear longer sleeves, longer pants. The bugs were bad but not as bad as I anticipated and it was really mostly at dusk.

We did not stay at AKR last trip (we stayed at Barefoot Cay, which is truly a 5 star experience)...however that's not why I am replying.

We went over to AKR on a non-dive day to do the snorkel with the dolphins experience. We didn't dive with them because it was pricier and we had my mom, a non-diver, with us. Anyhow, I HIGHLY recommend snorkeling with the dolphins. It starts with a dolphin experience and then your snorkel for about 1/2 hour with the dolphins. The best part is that the dolphins will play with you A LOT. They bump, mouth, sneak from behind, and if you dive down below the surface, they will mimic you and they are super fun. It was a lifetime memory for us! How often do you get to go underwater, face to face with a dolphin and have them clap their fins along with you like a mirror image? I am planning a return trip to Roatan now and I will do this experience again...it was that much fun.
