Why are split fins so bad for DIR diving? Everyone who has them says they are great. I have always used jet fins cause i got a pair for free when i started and they are still great. Just one of those things that I have wondered about since i found this site.

Probably the biggest reason why they are not approved for DIR diving is that they are line traps. In general, nothing is good for DIR diving if it's shaped so that it can trap and hold line.

They also don't work well to push big loads of gear through the water, and aren't very good for the kicks we use for precise maneuvering. Paddle fins make helicopter turns, back kicking and frog kicking easier to do.

split fins are more about shallow quick flutter kicks. once you start trying to frog kick in them, you can't push as much water with each stroke.
