I just bought a hammerhead ss backplate and plan on staying in mostly warmer waters (no drysuit for me, thanks.) However, I am considering the use of doubles from time to time as I want to start extending my bottom time.

Before the idea of doubles came up, I was all ready to go with an oxycheq 30 lbs wing. Now I am having second thoughts. It looks like dive-rite has a rec wing with 51 lb lift that can be contracted to use with a single tank or expanded to use with a double configuration.

Has anyone had any experience using this wing with singles? If I buy this primarily for singles am I making a mistake? Also, I cannot tell from the picture, but is there air-flow between the sides of the wing from the "butt" or aft end?

No.

This kind of question comes up a lot, but the gist of the threads are buy one wing for singles (~30 lbs.) and one for doubles (~50 lbs.), the cost is minimal considering the amount of money you'll spend to dive those doubles and a wing designed for both singles and doubles will do neither very effectively, although plenty of people do it without much trouble.

I have been using my RecWing for single. Though it has more lift than needed when diving singles, I have no problem with regards to trapped air when venting it. Although a wing dedicated for single would be more appropriate for single, streamline is not much of a problem for the RecWing for single.

I might be trying out to set it up with AL80 doubles setup. Some members on this board suggested that it will do just fine.

Hope this helps.

The Dive Rite Trek wing (40#) is a nice middle ground. Great with a single but can handle up to two 80s. And without a drysuit the lift is more than adequate.

I was curious about this myself and queried the board for a dual-purpose wing.

What I found out is that it is certainly doable. There are divers in my area that use OMS wings that serve both singles and doubles. I believe however that they primarily dive with doubles and dive occasionaly with singles.

I decided to go with a singles wing since the additional for two wings cost isn't really that great.

In your case since you will dive mostly with singles I recommend going with a singles wing. I admit however I never did try a doubles wing with a single tank.

As an update, I decided to go with a specific wing for the specific job...so I just ordered an oxycheq 30 lb from scubatoys. Figure that I will buy the right wing for doubles when I start needing a wing for doubles.

You made a good choice IMHO. You're going to like the streamlined, appropriately sized singles wing much more than a compromise wing. And just think how many new cool doubles wing options there will be if/when you go to doubles. :D
