Um, isn't this against the rules for an untrained Brand-X service person to service Brand-X equipment? Haven't I seen gazillions of posts about "How do I become a Brand-X repair tech?" on this board? Who will be responsible for the gear you service for the LDS if someone gets hurt using this equipment? I don't think this LDS owner knows anything about the law either.

I guess I should have elaborated on that more, but didnt feel the need. Since you brought it up, I will do so now. When they have gotten backed up a few times, I disconnected and tagged all the hoses from the first stages, disassembled and labeled all of the first stage components and set them up to soak. The owner who is certified in the repair of the brands he services does the final cleaning, re-assembly and testing of the regulators. The only equipment that I have been responsible for re-assembling is my own, and I take full responsibility for the functioning of it.

What kind of person goes into business to NOT make money?? I would like to read the business plan they presented to the bank to get the loan to start the business.

If you take the time to read a little more closely, you will notice that I never said they had no intention of making money. However it has been a generally accepted fact that the majority of dive shops are not exactly cash cows.

They are small business (for the most part) and like many small business they are started by people who like what they do. As such, many of them have had no formal sales training and it shows by the way the handle their business.

On the other hand, I personally know of someone who got a degree in psychology, then learned they could make more money by using it to make sales on commission than they could getting a job in their field.

Bottom line: Genesis, If you dont like your LDS, either do something to fix it or don't shop there. Why keep going back in to give them more chances to upset you? (not to mention driving 40 miles and paying two toll charges, thats just adding insult to injury)

Thank you for the explanation. That's a bit different than my image of your sitting at the bench taking apart regs. I recind my comment.

...but if I did I wouldn't give you squat. I can sense your attitude online, I can only imagine what it must be like in the store. If the store is still in bussiness I am sure they are doing the right thing by enough other CUSTOMERS (more than air fills) and are just putting up with you. Every one makes us happy, some when they enter others when they leave

the problem is that most of the OTHER options around here are WORSE!

(BTW, its not 40 miles - its 40 minutes. Not on a freeway...)

I know one group of guys who make a weekly run to Pensacola - about an hour and a half - to get fills. They got THAT pissed off at the local shops here in town - to the point that they will drive an hour and a half - one way - to fill tanks.

Now granted, there are four of 'em and they take a shiatload of tanks at a time over to get cranked, but then again, the price-per-tank is about HALF what is charged around here.

And no attitude either.

A tackle shop I like is over that way. I have gone in that shop. They're good people. Bought a few things in there too. But sheesh - 3 hours to get fills?

You KNOW people have gotten pissed at the local options when they're willing to drive that far to avoid giving money to the local folks.

I'd rather buy myself a compressor.... (and probably will)

Once again, a rant from Krazy Karl the Krusading Konsumer. Taking time off from some of your other rants?

Let me phrase this simply:

HAS IT OCCURED TO YOU THAT THE SHOP SIMPLY DOESN'T WANT YOU OR YOUR BUSINESS ANYWHERE NEAR THEM?

Personally, I'd be willing to give you a store credit (to another store) just to keep you away from me.

I'd also be more than happy to suggest a creative use for the hose on any compressor you might buy.

It must be an empty life to get so worked up over so little.

Have you given any thought to opening your own dive store? Since you can get stuff cheaper than your LDS anyway, you could sell it for less than them and still make a profit. Since you are considering your own compressor anyway and have a list of people who would rather shop elsewhere it might not be such a far fetched idea, even if you only opened for a limited number of hours per week.

Genesis - Why do you bother? Just buy the darn thing where the price is lowest! You seem to be far too concerned about their losing business. This seems contrary to you ideals - after all - it's their's to loose. Get over it and move on.

Other have suggested this. Genesis is MUCH (note the creative use of caps) tOo Important TO wASte his time running a dive store.

He doesn't understand put up or shut up (among the myriad other things that remain a mystery to him).
