Our first trip to San Pedro and we absolutely fell in love with the island. Drinking a rum punch on the beach as the sun sets with sand between the toes Im ready to go back.
We stayed at The Palms and would definitely stay there again. The rooms were great, good AC, loved the view from our balcony, beautiful pool and daily maid service. The dock was a mess from the hurricane, but traversable. We had our fridge stocked by Lagniappe and everything was there on arrival.
We dove with Protech solid operation and we would use them again. Israel was our dive master and he was wonderful. Peter, the owner, was also very helpful. Low season and post 2 hurricane warnings meant that the 3 of us were the only ones diving with Protech we were spoiled and often had the entire dive site to ourselves. We dove Esmerelda/Two Bouy, CypressTunnel, Hol Chan night dive, Tackle Box, Esmerelda, Tuffy and Shark Tunnels. Great diving. Loved the swim throughs. Loved the schools of fish, nurse sharks; overall good fish life and activity. Visibility fair around 60 feet. Coral damage moderate some from parrotfish, some broken and some covered with sand (looked like it had snowed on the coral). Average max depth 90ft, bottom time 55 minutes. FYI prices nearly uniform amongst all dive shops, however Patojos had the cheapest and two positives about Chuck and Robbies from locals. Rental equipment prices vary greatly. Every diver we talked to was happy with their operation and the diving.
We typically ate breakfast in with lunch and dinner out. All the restaurants were great and here are the ones we would highly recommend: Waraguma for lobster or shrimp burrito, El Patio for spicy seafood, Reef Restaurant for local seafood, Pepperonis for pizza (ask for Daves Special), Blue Water Grill for global fusion. The following restaurants were CLOSED for low season/2 hurricane warnings: Estelles, Elvis, Rojo Lounge, Mangoes, Tackle Box, Jambel.
We headed to Belize City for a cave tubing/zip line tour with Major Tom Belize Cave Tubing with Cave-Tubing.com - Masters of the Caves. Excellent!!! Again low season so we had no lines and unlimited time for question/answers from a native Belizean well versed in ancient Mayan culture and current history of Belize. He is a great advocate for Belizeans.
MISC: Weather was overall very good. Rained a couple of times at night, but usually partly sunny every day. We were there during Belizes Independence Day Celebration fireworks, live music at night, local parade the next day. FUN!
Island Supermarket overcharged us when calculator used, not when register used. No receipts printed out so pay close attention. We used Caribbean Connection for internet and enjoyed their frappucinos. Found good art at The Little Old Craft Shop (wood carvings, black coral), Ambergris Jade, and Belizean Arts (W. Castillo and Leo Vasquez.)
