Looking for any divers who may live close to Amarillo Texas.

If you are thinking about diving what is left of Lake Meredith, I suggest you take anything that you dive in or with that is clear, and find the most opaque black paint you can get, and coat them on both sides. The visibility will be much better than what I found when I dove it when it was close to the fullest it's ever been.

Howdy. I live about a hundred miles south of there. I originally started with a local Instructor co-oping with an Amarillo dive shop and my original kit & pony came from there. The shop closed after the owner was crippled in a plane wreck but there was another one operating there plus a new one opening at one time, altho its prospects didn't seem promising. I really haven't been in touch with anyone there in years, other than some SB members. I think the only one there currently active on SB is View Profile: GrumpyOldGuy - ScubaBoard - Scuba Diving Forum - Diving Social Network

I saw a news article saying that it was at the lowest in 40 years, which sounds odd for a lake started by a dam finished 23 years ago. The NPS is reviewing a new land based focus while the cities who put in the pipeline are finding new sources for water. My town was getting water from Lake McKenzie, but it is also not supplying now.

Some west Texas divers try Bottomless Lakes in New Meixco - I did for one dive once, and many of us got our OW in San Solomon Springs at Balmorhea TX, but Blue Hole in Santa Rosa New Mexico is the primary practice pit for the area - 7 mil suits suggested. See Rocky Mountain Region

Thanks Dandy

We are not planning on diving the lake? (did not even know there was one there)
We have a underwater cave system just over the NM line that we want to explore, but having trouble finding tanks in the area.

How neat. The oldest shop in town may well be the only one still in operation: Amarillo Scuba Center  - About Us

Once you head west, I do not know of any shops until you get to Santa Rosa NM. Once you cross the state line, you'll be almost as close to Santa Rosa as Amarillo, and the lady who runs the fill shack there is a sweetheart, glad to do anything she can, after hours, etc. - but her abilities are limited: No nitrox, old compressor that is still running last I heard. I guess you are familiar with the spring fed caves there.

Lubbock has 3 shops, 2 with nitrox, but not very close to I-40. Do let me know if I can assist in some way...?

I live 60 miles SE of Amarillo. That's pretty cool about the UW caves, I didn't know they had any in that region except for the blue hole. Can you post a trip report when you get done, I would love to read about it. As for dive shops yes the only one left is Amarillo Scuba off Georgia and I40. All the lakes in our area are looking pretty sad these days, thank God for the aquifer or we'd all run out of water.
