Can't say much, as the only operations I have dived with in SoCal are the "Sand Dollar" and Dive Connections (DCI) in San Diego. Both are excellent operations, nice, accommodating staff and fun all around. I haven't been on a fishing boat, but the OP made it sound as if they offer some kind of superior customer service. Maybe, I can't speak to that. I for my part do not expect the crew to roll out a red carpet for me. When I go diving, I feel more like a member of a team. I don't take that "I'm the paying customer" attitude that a lot of people seem to adopt. Please, by no means am I implying that the OP did - I'm merely relating my experience. And usually, I find that boat crews appreciate it when you make an effort to fit in, for example, if you grab a piece of equipment someone is trying to haul aboard, even though it's not mine, or prevent a tank from rolling around by securing it with a weight. Little things like that. In the past, I've noticed that I was treated differently than some other, more demanding folks because of this.

Business is business and customer relations are critical to survival. In this economy, if an outfit can't provide the service expected, don't worry, they won't be around long.

Look at all the closing dive shops. Boats are operating by a thin margin and press like this can sink (pun intended) them.

The Peace is an excellent boat with a great crew. It's about the only boat I'll book a trip on.

6. Never speak to a cook on a boat unless he/she speaks to you first. This applies to all boats, not just dive boats.

lol I've never heard this before.. And the reason is... ?

This is the norm on off-shore (here in SoCal) fishing boats. I don't know why, I just did it.

I would like to know the secret about not talking to the cook as well.

I went out on the bottom scratcher about 3 yrs back for a night dive on Catalina. It was a 4 hr drive from where I live, and with an early departure time I made arrangements to arrive early, and they let me crash on the boat. The captiain was really nice, the food was OK, and there was one diver that got into a little trouble and the crew handled that well. Not sure if it is still under the same ownership now though, I remember someone mentioned that it was not the same owner, but cant say for sure.

I've been out on 6 boats out of So Cal. None have been bad, I'd try each of them again under certain circumstances, and the Peace and Great Escape have been particularly good. Both boats are roomy with nice clean bunks, the heads and showers work, crews are friendly helping divers with gear, yanking your fins off at the swim step, etc. The dive sites are usually good, good dive briefings, and they do quality roll calls. The food is good and I always talk to the cook, and he always talks back, so what that's all about?

Wow. Thanks you all for the great responces.
Please understand that these complaints are based purely on the fact that I had students with me. I do feel a crew carries an additional responsibility to make students very comfortable. If we (professionals in the biz) dont continue to create happy divers then the future is bleak.
For myself, I could care less. Get me there and back and let me do my thing. This trip was not for me and that was made very clear when booking and on board. I try very hard to cater to my students and build a trust and confidence that will keep them coming back to me for advice and future training. I simply cannot see why any operation would not want to carry that on.
As far as the cook thing, I dont get it. Crew is crew. You're in or you're out.
Again, thank you for the help, thoughts and suggestions.
