This is the second fish I've heard of being caught by hook and line and did not know I could apply for a record. I've seen some fairly big ones recently.
I wonder if speared fish will be valid :)

IGFA | New All-Tackle Record Lionfish

The first All-Tackle record for lionfish was recently approved by the IGFA: a 0.74 kg (1 lb 10 oz) red lionfish (Pterois volitans) that was caught off the coast of Miami, Florida, USA on September 7, 2013 by Capt. Mike Murias. The fish was caught on a live pilchard while Murias was targeting snapper and other reef fish in about 61 meters (200 feet) of water. Having never seen a lionfish that size, Murias placed it on ice and contacted the IGFA, where he learned that the IGFA keeps All-Tackle records for any species that weighs over a pound, and is at least half the maximum reported weight of the species. As it turns out, Murias’ bycatch was heavy enough to earn him the first ever All-Tackle world record for red lionfish!

There are restrictions on types of tackle.

But you can go for different classes based on type of line etc. This was all tackle so you could probably go for one of the lighter line classes.

I have two simultaneous reactions.
Whatever, and Cool!
As far as I know,
The world record is still 18 3/8" long or so for a Cape Canaveral area Lion.
But, this fish net the IGFA criteria, and someone has to go first.

Chug
Has a 17 1/4" personal record in off of Pompano Beach, Fl.

Chug, on hook and line?

Ive seen some fat suckers which I would bet my house would easily beat the IGFA record, but 1.- They will not qualify as they would be speared 2.- Lionfish going after hooks and line is good news.
