Having had personal experience staying at the Fiesta Americana last year I would suggest that if you do stay there you do eat dinner in town because that was the worst meal they had at the Hotel, always leftover breakfast and lunch but just a different color.

You will probably find that the AI price will probably still save you money if you stay at this Hotel because the price of a couple of rounds of drinks quickly adds up to the AI surcharge, plus you get the convience of having breakfast and lunch paid for and these were the best meals of the day at this Hotel. It's also nice to get up and just go eat instead of having to go out everytime want something to eat.

That's just my $0.02, everyone is different.

By the way, crossing the road isn't a big deal it's like one lane, not very busy they have another small pool there as well as a bar on the beach too so you don't have to go back and forth if you get thristy. It's also a little bit quieter over there too.

It has been a few years since I stayed at FA. At that time crossing the road was tough because of the traffic. They have since built a highway that runs to the east of the FA & crossing the road is not the life threatening event it once was. Still, I prefer not to have a road running through my resort.

They must have really changed the food service at the FA too. When I was there you ordered off a menu. The food was cooked especially for you, just like a real restaurant. They had a buffet for breakfast but not dinner. For lunch you could go to the buffet restaurant or to the ala carte restaurant. We liked the ala carte better.

We did not book that hotel, but got bumped there as Apple Vacations had over booked the property we wanted & prepaid for. So I had a bad attitude about it right from the start. There were many things about FA I didn't like. But we still had a great time.

The food downtown is awesome. Pick AI for convenience, but got to town for dinner. You will have some of the best food of you life at some of the restaraunts. Get Christy's list from Blue XT Sea Diving.

We have stayed at the FA several times and used the AI for the first time last year. The total bill was less than we paid in years past and we still went into town for dinner most of the time (ate at their fancy restaurant a couple of times and it was great).

The convenience of breakfast and lunch right on the ocean was great and the cost of drinks was a benefit.

JC Fedorczyk:
Putting together plans for a trip to cozumel end of december. This will be the first time there. In your opinions would it be money better spent if the girlfriend and I went the all inclusive route to cover the cost of food and drink or would it be cheaper in the long run to just hit different restaurants each time we want to eat?

If we go the all inclusive route it would probably be Fiesta Americana. If we go the eat where ever route we would probably stay at Villa Blanca or El Cid Cieba.

Is it expensive to eat and drink in cozumel? My girlfriend swears it would be expensive for us to eat out everytime and to drink at the bars but I've been reading posts that seem to say differently. Any idea on average how much we would spend for an 8 day 7 night trip down there? Fiesta Americana would be 30-45$ per day for the all inclusive portion.

I have stayed at the F.A. and The La Ceiba. I have not stayed at Villa Blanca. I can recommend F.A. as a very good bargain but I CAN NOT recommend La Ceiba. I would suggest that you visit Tripadvisor.com and get feedback from people who have stayed at both. I always stay at the El Presidente. My vacation time is very important to me. As far as restaurants or A.I. , I have spoken to numerous people over the years who have gone A.I and I always ask them how the food was. They ALWAYS give me the same response " Oh it's O.K. " Hardly a ringing endorsement. There are some teriffic restaurants in Cozumel and they are not expensive. The seafood alone is one of the reasons I go to Cozumel. You're being foolish if you miss it.

Well, as you can tell it's not a simple question, I pefer to not do the AI thing, La Cieba is our regular hotel, we eat breakfast there, they have a buffett and you can load up before being picked up by the dive boat at the hotel pier.

We usually only do morning boat dives so our afternoons are to ourselves, we either lay on the beach and get something light from the hotel restaurant and save the big meal for dinner or walk down to Ernesto's for lunch. If we're doing a night dive we will eat a big lunch and grab some nachos or quesadillas after.

For dinner we may eat at the hotel once, maybe twice during the week, we have a bunch of regular restaruants we try to hit downtown while we are there. and that list just keeps growing all the time!

Our hotel check out bill for a week of breakfasts, lunches, 1 or 2 dinners and drinks charged to the room is around $200+-, what's that come to? um...$28 a day?

For eating downtown you have a lot of options, most of our restaurants we usually go all out, drinks, apatizers, meal, dessert, after dinner drinks, the full 9 yards. but you can eat down there and good food for reasonable prices, less than $30 for the 2 of you.
My experience has been folks that do AI end up eating downtown once or twice anyway, just because the same hotel food gets to be routine and you want to go to town and get some local culture of shop anyway.

One way to save on your drink costs is to go to the supermaket, sort of a local Wal-Mart, I never can remember the name but it's something like Chadreau , you'll see it on the south end of town as you head twards your hotel. anyway go there and buy beer and water to put in your hotel fridge and buy some snacks for the room, that will save some bucks.

Just a couple thoughts:

1) If you have kids or folks on the trip that are not at all adventurous, then consider AI for convenience.

2) If you have teens that normally eat you out of house and home, then go AI for economy.

3) If you have reasonably adventurous adults that are not whiny prima donnas, then go for eating around town.

Search this board for the ten million posts listing the best restaurants in Cozumel.

There are definitely some restaurants that can be a little pricey. We had steak and Lobster at La Mission, and it cost a bunch. I have eaten at Prima's a few times and it is not cheap. Good, but not cheap. (Note that both are central to the "tourist" part of town)

Personally I LOVE Guido's, so I don't mind spending a bit of money to have a real nice meal occasionally.

However, with a little bit of effort, or research or exploration you can find a lot of really good food for reasonable prices.

Trust me, the locals don't eat at Prima, La Mission or Guido's all the time. There are a lot of places that have good food at economical prices. Many are called "economicas". I found that if you get a little off the beaten path, you can find some great places to eat.

I found a little taco place just up the road from Prima's (away from the tourist area) The taco's were very tasty, and like 60 cents each. There is a little place called Comida Casera Tonita (or something very similar) where you can get a three course lunch for about $3.50 or so. Las Palmas was also very good and very reasonable. El Morrito has three places. The Tacos and Burritos at the Hotel Flamingo were outstanding.

Here are a couple thoughts to ponder: In your town, are there expensive and inexpensive restaurants? Of course. Some are way too pricey to eat at all the time unless you are Bill Gates. Are they worth eating at occasionallY? Sure. Are there some restaurants that offer good food for a reasonable price in your town? Sure. Which places advertise in the high dollar venues? The expensive places. Which restaurants are in the fancy center of your town, the economical ones or the high end ones? Isn't the "overhead" higher in the downtown areas and lower in the outlying areas? Who pays for the higher cost of floor space right where the action is? You, the customer.

Okay, so Cozumel is not all that different. In general the more economical places are a little away from the center of town, away from where the average tourist/cruise ship passenger will wander. In general the economical places will not be advertised on the cruise ships or at the hotels.

The people that live and work in Cozumel can't afford to eat at the fancy places every day any more than you or I can. We can justify more expensive meals because we are rich foreigners and because we are on vacation dang it!

I did a simple thing. I asked my dive guides where they eat. I asked some of the hotel staff what they recommend for just a normal meal. I also asked them for some good restaurants too, and they said Prima's and Guido's and La Mission etc. I asked the people that worked in the Dive Shop where they got their lunches, and that is how I found some places that were really good for low prices.

At Tonita and at Las Palmas, we see locals coming in with tupperware containers to buy food. At the taco place, I was the only Anglo in the place. All had really good food for LOW prices.

My recommendations are to skip the AI, explore the town, and find some great food choices. Have a couple meals at the popular places (expensive) that you found out about here on SB, but also ask around to find some great economicas. Support the mom & pop restaurants and save some money at the same time. Be willing to ask some questions, take some chances and walk a few blocks.

Just my opinions, and only because you asked.

Thanks guys. I think we've hit on a plan for what to do. Since the group of people that we've got lined up to go enjoy their alcohol we're going to go with AI. Most likely Fiesta Americana but maybe Occidental. I never even thought of the convienence of getting breakfast/lunch before the boat shows up. We'll hit the town for dinners without a doubt.

We've got the tickets so now it comes down to finding the hotel and then more importantly the dive op. I've already contacted all the good ones that have been suggested throughout the board.

My 2 cents always pick your diveop first then you hotel after all your there to dive not stay in the hotel. :D Liquid Blue is another op that is recommended http://www.liquidbluedivers.com/indexx.html

You can pm Christi on this board to let her know you have sent her an email at her business address. If her email is on the fritz she will respond to you via pm here.

Have fun in Coz we will be there in July.

If you stay at FA request a room above the 3rd floor and bring a lock for the dive lockers. If one is available you can use it for free, even if you don't dive w/ Dive House.

Be sure to eat at fine restaurant if it is open. It is very good. The fajitas by the pool were great and if your group has "non diving partyers" the AI will be more than worth it and pay for itself
