We just returned to Cayman Brac for shore diving after a three-year absence. After a week diving nearly a dozen sites around the island, we are seeing widespread algae cover and few fish, plus a lot of bleaching. We've been asking around, but nobody seems able to say when this happened and what may have caused it. Has anyone seen or heard anything similar?

I was on the Brac a few weeks ago and did all boat dives, but ended up on some of the shore accessible sites such as Cemetery and Radar Reefs. I did not see significant bleaching or algae and the reefs were quite fishy. There is no Stony Coral Disease reported there yet. Interesting how divers experiences differ.

Overall , we had a pretty good week of diving. For December, conditions were good and we had the opportunity to dive 2 days on the south side and 4 on the north. Conditions did not allow for a Brac run or a trip over to LC. The reefs are not what they were 20 years ago but still looked healthy. Lots of Groupers, Eagle Rays, Turtles, schooling fish. Hoag did a trip report for a visit 2 weeks before us and his comments and photos suggest a healthy reef system as well.

There was a lot of Sargassum build up earlier in the year which may have affected the OPs experience.
