I'm assuming that Aqualung does still include a 'dust cap' with each ACD reg they sell, which kinda implies using a 'dust cap' is still necessary, per the manufacturer, doesn't it ?

Here is a scan from my owners manual for AL Legend Glacia with ACD.

i just checked my manual and it does contain that statement too.
so i guess it really is my fault that i didnt see this sooner.
however the way the ACD is marketed lead me and a couple of dive friends to believe that it is indeed a watertight seal, at least while soaking and cleaning.
all in all, i do love the regulator and i would have bought it even without the ACD.
i just feel that the way they marketed and pushed ACD, it gives the buyer a false sense of what it is.

Here is a picture of all the parts of an Aqua Lung Legend ACD regulator completely
disassembled.

do any of you guys have the AL Legend ACD 1st stage technical manual?
i only have the manual for the non-ACD version.

This may have been covered in an earlier post and I missed it. If so, I apologize.

My biggest reservation to AquaLung's Auto-Closure Device (ACD) is you can't see the inlet filter. Inspecting that filter is important because you never know what particulate matter may have been in the tank. Compressor filters fail, tanks corrode internally, and fill station manifolds and cylinders are rarely assembled in a clean room. Granted, the probability is low that an unnoticed catastrophic clog will occur. However, a slow performance degradation may be worse — especially if you are on vacation and make a lot of shallow dives before making one much deeper.

I have seen one instance where a first stage filter was fully plugged during the first dive due to some very sloppy maintenance. How well do you trust the whole air source system and the people operating it?

i know what you mean.
it has been my habit to inspect the filters after every rinse/soak of my former regulators.
although the ACD in concpet should prevent large particulate matter from blocking the filter, it still important for me to inspect the condition of the filter itself.

have any of you considered removing the ACD mechanism itself?

Akimbo,
I was about to mention this. Over the years, I have developed the habit of checking the inlet filter regularly. In fact, when I was in the water almost every day and doing "hit and miss" maintenance on my USD Sea first stage, I replaced the cone filter with a Conshelf flat filter (it fit and worked fine) to make this easier.
