If someone just wants an inexpensive tank, I'm sure any of those will fit the bill. I'm sure that they would all work reliably and safely.

The buoyancy characteristics of a Luxfer S80 make it a popular choice for use as a stage bottle because of the way it rides in your slipstream when you sling it. So, if someone plans on moving to a steel tank later, the old tank can become a nice stage bottle if one decides to move in that direction.

Maybe you can sell him yours!

Ross has 16-50 dives, so I don't think that was his goal. I thought he wanted to get an inexpensive tank. (I still belive this was the case).

Luxfer 80 has a 5.8 lb differential. 31.38lbs
Luxfer S80 has a 5.86 differential. 35.12 lbs
Catalina S80 has a 5.8 diff. 31.6 lbs
Catalina C80 has a 6.1 diff. 34.4 lbs

Luxfer is .22 lbs lighter with the same weight required on your belt. It's better, but is it worth 20-30% more? Like I said before, the valve would be the only think to make me pick one other than the Catalina (the DIN/Yoke adapter is nice)

I do plan to get a stage bottle for emergencies, but a 19 as much as I would want to sling. I think i'd go doubles if I needed all that air.

Jan, the 19 cu ft stage bottle runs over 100 bucks as well. I think it's supply and demand for pricing...

Thanks for everyone's input.

As it turns out, in the end I want a tank...I prefer metal but will entertain options in wood or styrofoam. :D

Ross, if you dive a din regulator you will require an adaptor for most yoke AL 80 tanks. If you have a yoke reg you will be fine with any AL 80 tank. As I was saying, the dual Yoke/Din valve was probably worth buying. I have a DIN and a yoke tank, so that would allow me to just use my DIN with no adaptor... Otherwise you should be fine with any tank which has a current visual sticker on it (the date is within the last 12 months)...

Good luck!

I believe that Hollywood Divers is selling some of their used AL 80s for about $90. I believe that they are Luxfer S080 aluminums, but you'll want to contact them to be sure.

Brand spanking new Catalina AL80s for $109.00 including valve out the door at Sport Chalet all year long and no worries about buying a used Luxfer from the problem alloy batch.

  :lol2: Goodnes, I'm dying on the floor laughing my head off...

Don't you think the positive bouyancy of a wood or styrofoam tank would increase the need for additional weights, decreasing the lower cost/ added value of a wooden or styrofoam tank?

just dying....rolling...ow....cramping now....

Sport Chalet = $109! Al 80...best price around....of course, then you are enabling the evil red empire...

I got my Steel 95 from a scuba swap for only $50. I also got a st 72 for $20. Next Scuba swap is in April. Wait til then. It's not like the weather is going to clear up before then anyway...

The new tanks from LUXFER are fine. But since he was looking at used, well, there are a lot of the suspect alloy tanks out there. I would also recommend buying new for a mear $20.00 more than the $90 he was talking about for a used Luxfer tank of unknown alloy.

You may want to find out when Sports Chalet is going to have their 25% off sale on all of their scuba equipment. It is a very very good time to pick up tanks.

I have no problem buying from Sports Chalet. They have good prices, great hours, and good locations. I've never felt anything "evil" about them.

My LDS doesn't even try to compete with Sports Chalet on tanks; they told me to buy them there...
