If your going to Mexico on the Yucatan or are going to Cozumel. Change it. Akumal Has A dive Shop there. They caves senotase beracuda lagunes good restraunts. It was aawsome.!!!!! just thought I would let you know:)

Please tell us more, where did you stay, who did you dive with? Did you reef dive as well as the cenotes? Other details?
Thanks so much.

I did 5 dives total on a week and half trip there. 4 dives in sanotase and 1 in the ocean. in the sanotase it was 100ft visability and 40ft deep it was preaty cold but refreshing!. The Ocean was great 85 degrees F. I went to 45ft for 40min. We saw a 5ft Bericuda it was awsome. you can go in tunnles and stuff. make sure you tip your boat captian after the dive. he left us there. and we drifted for a hour tell a search party found us:( .
The car rental was 19$ a day. We stayed in a rental house a 1/4mile from the dive shop. I realy recomend the sanotase. they were sweet. I swear I'm going there again:) bring a full leangth wet suit I was wearing a shorty and got wasted on the reef. I had to have stiches. thx for listening:mean:

Thanks for the info, you should post a whole trip report.
Do you remember the name of the dive shop you used?

We were there last year and we're going back in December (taking friends with us this trip). Not good that your boat left you. We'd heard of that happening, but the shop we used was really great, very attentive, and didn't leave anyone. (And we tipped when we paid up after our last dive.) How did you get so scratched up on the reef? 10 ocean dives and none of our group of 6 had any problems.

There are great packages to stay at Vista del Mar (condos on Half Moon Bay) and dive with Akumal Dive Adventures (their shop, right next door). You get 15% off on the accommodations and 10% off on your dives. We did Dos Ojos and Bat Cave cenotes with Hidden Worlds.

The diving in Akumal doesn't compare to Coz, but it's nice, easy drift dives, 50-80ft, on healthy reefs with a good amount of tropicals and big stuff to see. In 4 days last Dec we say 3 rays, 7 baraccuda, 4 turtles, 2 huge moray, a couple nurse sharks. There were lots of angels, parrot fish etc., too. The fish seemed larger and more oblivious to divers then most places.

It's very laid back, no nightlife to speak of. About 6 or 7 restaurants, 2 beach bars, maybe 5 shops, a small grocery and 3 convenience stores. From our condo to "town" (Akumal Bay) it was about a 15 min walk. But, you're about 25 min drive from either Playa del Carmen or Tulum so you can take a short drive for more restaurants, shops and nightlife (in PDC).

I got stiches from when I was in a tunne; and got slammed against the side;-0 . Thank God I could still dive:) that week. We stayed in a house called the cannon beach house wich is on the tip of Akumal bay. I used the rental gear at the Akumak Dive shop by Padi wich has 5stars.. I think it was greaet. It was realy hot. we went last week and it was sometimed 95F and humid. .
Scuba wife did you go to a Restraunst . I don't know the name. its theme was bones. it was on half moon bay. it had tree houses and stuff. it was next to a other dive center.

The restaurant/beach bar is La Buena Vida. It's right next door to Akumal Dive Adventures and Vista del Mar (the shop we use and condos we stay in) in "north Akumal" right in the middle of Half Moon Bay.

For anyone interested (who's old enough to enjoy Happy Hour), La Buena Vida is lots of fun for Happy Hour! They've got bar swings, and also crows nest's that you can go up into with great views of the bay and sunset is always good. The upstairs restaurant however, just ok. Heard they've got the old management back so we'll try it again, but LBV is really good for lunch and Happy Hour in the beach bar. Lol Ha (on Akumal Bay, in "town") has a nice patio restaurant and a nicer indoor restaurant too. Get the Mexican Coffee. The flaming production is worth it even if you don't like coffee. Another of our favs is La Lunita (a bit further north on Half Moon Bay). Wonderful dinner with tables right on the beach. The last must is Turtle Bakery Cafe for breakfast. Really good.

A great site for info and booking rental villas and condos is www.locogringo.com. The couple who runs it are Americans who've moved to Akumal. They know all the properties and owners. (unfortunately, the deal we get for accom & diving has to be booked directly with Vista del Mar).
