Scuba Diver 03,

Where did you dive to 120'? I thought PADI (don't know if that's your certifying agency) only certified divers under 15 to dive to a maximum of 40'.

no I got to just be with a ADULT. There is no limitations. only 10-12 its 40ft and you have to with adult. but when you 12 to 15it just Adult.

I believe the depth limit for a junior diver who has done the deep diver specialty is 70'. And going in a cave without training. even a lil way, is asking for disaster. I am not a caver but I'm sure many here could chime in.

No caving or cavern until 18 years of age. I would question an op that takes a 13yo "a little way in".

Decent Akumal op for ow, cavern & cave:

Where did you look it up? I think SSI has a 60ft limit even with an adult.

Entering the cave without any training is madness.....if you don't agree take a look at Steve Gerrard's book, "Cenotes of the Riviera Maya" and read the section on accident analysis. That should be convincing enough. Guided cavern tours are different but make sure you have a reputable guide.

Right on....

SSI recommends junior divers 10-11 do not exceed 40 FSW (and no SSI dive leader may take them deeper) and older junior divers don't exceed 60' - again a requirement as far as SSI dive leaders go - but we must bear in mind that these recommendations carry no legal weight when we're talking about parents and their children. Additionally, the limit is established mainly because we just don't know what deliterious effects sub-clinical (or even full blown) DCS may have on young growing bones - but it seems reasonable and prudent to be conservative - after all, bubbles can't be good for the epiphyses.
As for cavern/cave, what this youngster's talking about (I believe) is the guided cenote dives in the (mainly) cavern zone conducted on a routine basis for open water divers by the shops in the Mayan Riviera. The guide is certified to lead these dives and may take no more than four non-cave divers with him/her. Age isn't an issue on guided dives of this sort.
