I did the Cancun to Chetumal bus run on a couple of occaisions. It works fine if you are not in a hurry and you probably will need to spend the night in Cancun which adds up. Taxis, food, hotels for the night, etc. If you can add up all the numbers and still come out on top, then go for it.
