A few more questions: Do I need a special inflator hose and/or corrugated hose for the AIR2 or SS1? Which one works with regular hoses?

I've done some reading on these units, and it seem the SS1 is considered a good breather, and the rest are considered poor. Is that still the case? How does the current (4th generation) AIR2 perform?

How deep is it safe to take these things?

Lots of people LOVE the Air 2. Lots of people LOVE Scubapro regs.
More power to them. I have never wanted to own one (way too tempermental for me), although I loved my Double Black bc that cost me $240 wholesale from Scubapro in the late '80's until it was stolen in the Kaneohe Bay municipal swimming pool parking lot in 1991.
As you might surmise, I am still kinda irate about this. I LOVED that bc.
I would still slowly torture to slightly-beyond-death the rat illegitimate offsprings who stole it from my Ford Ranger.
I'm sure this doesn't add beans to the thread, but I still need to vent this from time to time.
Thanks!

None of these work with the air hose that comes with the BC. Each
comes with its own hose that connects to your first stage and
has a quick disconnect similar to a standard inflator hose
but has a bigger diameter for better air flow.

The thing to be careful of is the diameter of the corrogated hose.
Most are 1" but some like Aeris/Oceanic I believe are only 3/4"
in diameter.

The Atomic SSI comes with adapters so it will work with any
sized corrogated hose. I think the AIR2 works on 1" corrogated
hoses.

The SS1 also has a fitting on the corrogated hose that unscrews
so that you can easily remove the SS1 from the corrogated hose.

Hope that helps,

I have my AirII since 1988... for more than 900 dives now... and one of the first things I purchased (via eBay) for my son and daughter when they started diving was an AirII... I love it, I don't want to dive anymore without it... it's simple, it's great... period...
Yes, if you insist you can leave out a pin such that you can unscrew the thing underwater. Yes, to do need a slightly longer corrugated hose in order to comfortably be able to breathe from it and still have enough freedom to look to the right.

Okay, I found this: http://scuba.com/shop/product.asp?category=37&fromsearch=1&hashvalue=034048

For $15 (+ shipping) it converts the SS1 or AIR2 fitting to a standard reg hose fitting. But then I couldn't switch between inflator and drysuit in an emergency.

note: edited imagine, I posted the wrong adapter at first.

The SS1 comes with three different size adapters so that it will fit virtually any corrugated hose.

I have been down to 105 ft with My SS1. I like them better than the AIR2 that I had on my ScubaPro Knighthawk BC. I switched the Air 2 for the SS1 while I still owned the Knighthawk BC.

I lost 53 lbs and needed to by a new BC. I came down to either the Knighthawk or the Aeris ATMOS XT. The ATMOS XT fit better so I went with IT. We simply switched the SS1 over to the ATMOS XT and put the AIR2 back on the Knighthawk that I will be selling.

I really like the fact that it breathing capability is close to the Atomic B2 regulator I use. I also like the fact that it makes it a no-brainer to rinse out the inside of the BC at the end of each dive day since you simply unscrew it and pour fresh water in through the corrugated hose.

Also, the SS1 only needs to be serviced once every two years or 300 dives (which ever comes first) while the AIR2 needs to be serviced every year and carries a 1 year warranty. ScubaPro provides free parts if you have it serviced every year, Atomic does not. The Atomic warranty is for two years and is fully transferable while the ScubaPro warranty is limited to the original purchaser.

My daughter was certified last May and uses an SS1 and my wife will be starting her OW classes in January and she will also be using an SS1.

The purge button on the SS1 is also much large that the one on the AIR2.

My local LDS has not had any SS1 units that had to come back for servicing within the two year warranty period.

My understanding is that the engineers that started Atomic actually came from ScubaPro.

SP is using the standard corrugated hose like DR sells on their website. As I understand, you are supposed to attach it to your BP/W. What I have done was to get the new corrugated hose (16inch) and gasket from DR and then attach it to the Eclipse wing. So, I can swap the whole hose set up with the genuine one within 10 seconds depending on your needs.

Nope. You can't use the dry suit hose on the Air 2. But, why? Your dry suit is supposed to be your back up buoyancy device in the emergency situation?

Edit: I don't think you can get Atomic parts somewhere as long as you are affiliated with the shop.
