Get a diagram of the CGA-347 valve. The stem (the part that is stripped) is different from the sealing valve. As long as the valve is closed you should be able to remove the stem without emptying the whole cylinder.
You'll need to isolate the cylinder from the others to determine if the valve is closed though. Be careful.
